Syncing Files

I recently set up my windows 7 computer with xpmode to run older programs. I've created a virtual drive (windows 7 (s:)) using a batch file in the host machine that points to documents in libraries. In xpmode i've moved "my documents" to point to the virtual drive s: which is documents on the host machine so i'm always working with the same files.

Do i need to have sync on in xpmode? It is set to sync on log off now. If i need sync i need to get the settings right because i get error messages when i log off that the tsclient couldn't connect (or something to that effect) and sync couldn't be completed.

Live Mail Not Syncing With Gmail

I cannot seem to sync with my gmail account. I keep getting the error message: your imap command could not be sent to the server, due to non-network errors. This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system.

Configuration:
   Account: gmail (xxxx)
   Server: imap. Gmail.com
User name: email removed for privacy
   Protocol: imap
   Port: 993
   Secure(ssl): 1
   Code: 800ccc0e

1) i have enabled imap in my gmail settings
2) i have triple checked my username and password in the windows live settings / properties
3) my internet connection is strong .
4) yes 'logon using clear text authentication' is selected
5) the only anti-virus software i am running is microsoft security essentials.

Syncing Samsung Intrepid Cell Phone Using Macbook

I have a macbook computer and i just purchased a samsung intrepid cell which use windows 6. 5. I wanted to sync it with my computer but they are not compatible. I cannot even download the free downloads from the windows website on my computer - it just will not accept it. I don't know what to do, do i have to start buying all this software to connect them? I would love to sync them and i would love to get some of the free downloads, how can i do this without spending a fortune? If i could not sync them i guess that would be okay but i would really like the downloads. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Files Send To Dvd-rw Drive On Network Results In Deleted Files

"send to dvd-rw drive" when the source files are on a network drive results in deleted files! Windows 7 rc 7100. Have a mapped drive to another computer. I opened the folder, right clicked on a group of .doc files. I choose "send to dvd-rw drive". Responded to the prompt of "use like usb drive" or use in a cd/dvd player by choosing the 2nd choice. Then was faced with a prompt that filename.doc is no longer in this location cancel/retry/skip. All the files were gone! Not in recycle bin of either computer.

Programs Files Vs Program Files (x86)

What is the difference between the "program files" folder & the "program files (x86)" folder, in c drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after i upgraded from vista to 7, except that internet explorer is in both, meaning that when i "open with" for a text file i get ie listed twice. Can i move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

A2c Files Downloaded As Zip Files

If you go to alice.org and try to download one of their image files, ie8 changes the extension from a2c to zip making the file unusable unless the user manually changes the file extension.

http://alice.org/index.php?Page=gallery/amusement park/index

In our school network users are not allowed to change the file extension so that does not work. I found that the user when downloading has to change the file type to all files and change the file extension then. This is a bother to have to remember. When i tried with a different browser (chrome) the a2c file was recognized correctly. The computers in my school are laptops running windows xp. At home my desktop runs windows 7 and the problem is there as well. There was no problem with ie7.

Docx Files Downloading As Zip Files

I am having an issue with docx files turning into zip files when i try and download them in ie8. I have done alot of research on this problem and have looked into the 2 main solutions to this problem: 1) set security settings to "open file based on file content, not file extension" to disable  2) check the mime type table on the web server and make sure the office 2007 extensions are added.

The first step i tried and the file was still trying to open as a zip file. The second one i was only able to ask the vendor because the web server does not belong to me, but the vendor said they were able to get the same exact docx file to download as a docx file and everyone on their end was able to. I am able to save the zip file and rename the file extension to docx and open it, but sadly this will not be an acceptable answer.

I've tried adding registry settings to allow it to open with docx files as well with no success.
I am curious if anyone has any other suggestions for me?

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.

Cannot Delete Files

I just moved from a computer with vista to one with windows 7 (64-bit). In doing, i saved a bunch of emails on the old computer as files, then copied them (over a wireless network) to the new computer. The browser was firefox; the files are . Eml filetype. Now, i want to delete some.

I can't delete the individual files: 'delete' doesn't appear in the context menu, and i can't drag them to the recycle bin. However, i think i can delete the entire folder: 'delete' is in the folder's context menu, whether the folder is in the left or main pane. But i don't want to delete the entire folder.

Now this is what i really don't understand. I go the folder's properties, uncheck the read-only box (it's not checked, but solid color), hit 'apply' and 'ok, " i get a window and it's running through all the files. But when i go back to the folder's properties, the box is filled in again. The read-only box for the files is unchecked, but i still can't delete then.

I ran windows explorer as administrator, but it doesn't seem to matter. The 'full control' box is checked in properties. Details.

I even added a "no need to keep" subfolder. I can copy the . Eml files i no longer want to that folder, but not move them, which is what i want to do (to clean out the folder).

What should i do?

Wtv Files

Folks, win7 records tv shows in this wtv format and has a built-in tool to convert them to dvr-ms format. I use ps3 media server and it doesn't recognize wtv yet so i have to convert. The problem is, wtv converter that comes with win7 starts the conversion process and then dies off after converting like 5-6 minutes of the show. How can i diagnose this problem? Would a codec pack cause this? Better yet, is there an alternative converter for wtv into whatever?

No Offline Files

I have a user that has offline files enabled and syncing. When she takes her laptop out of the office, she can login and see her files, work with them and return to the office an sync the changes. Now for the problem, if she wants to connect to say a hotel wi-fi, she can do so, but after logging in she doesn't have her offline files. It appears that windows 7 creates a new profile for her. She is using her domain login credentials and does not change to (this computer) when she is connected elsewhere.

Backing Up Files

I prepare accounts for a local society and previously used works and windows xp. I was in the habit of backing up the accounts file each time a change was made, to an external drive by using the save as command and overwriting the previous copy. I now have a new computer running windows 7 and find the system will not allow me to overwrite the previous copy. The panel advising that the file already exists appears with the option to overwrite but when i click "yes" another panel appears which says it cannot access the document. Please advise how i can achieve the required backup

Files And Folders

I installed window 7 last october. Running windows 7 home premium. Really love it. Recently, i went to access some old saved email messages i have saved in a folder, in my documents. When i go to open up (any) file that is a . Eml file from my documents, an outlook 'new message' window opens with a shortcut link at the top of my new message of that file. I click to open it and nothing happens. I try right-clicking the file within my documents folder using 'open with. ' and a window opens with the only option to select or recommended programs is internet explorer.

I tried using this option and the same occurs, outlook new message opens up with the icon shortcut. I try right-clicking /open with/ and browse and ( this is where i think i went wrong!) I browse and select microsoft office/office12/and select the outlook icon for the outlook application, click save. Then the window of 'open with' choose the program you want to use to open this file: and i select microsoft office outlook, the 'ok" with the same result - - - an new outlook message with the shortcut appears and i am back in that same loop with a file i cannot open.

I only have hundred of these . Eml files that i now cannot access. Please someone help me with the solution to what (i am sure) is an easy, but unknown resolution to my issue!

Extract All Files

I am running window 7 home & student and have downloaded some topo maps. They are zipped map files and i want to extract all files into a non-zipped folder.

When i follow microsoft's video instructions a zipped folder is created with a sub-folder that is not a zipped folder. The zipped folder is empty except for the subfolder and the subfolder contains the files. The files are still zipped even after i clicked "extract all files".

If i delete the subfolder and it's files and then copy and paste the files from the original folder which are already zipped into the zipped folder and wait for the long rezipping process i have zipped files in a zipped folder.

When the zipped folder is opened in explorer and i click "extract all files", the file names are placed into the map folder but not as files. Everyone is a zipped folder.

Does anyone have a solution?

Transferring Files

My computer died last week as the motherboard decided to take a permanent vacation.

I have taken my old hard drive out which was running windows xp and there is no damage to any of the data (thank goodness). The hard drive is now in place in my new computer as a slave drive only (e).

I want to transfer the settings from the old hard drive to the new hard drive which is running windows 7. I know there is a file transferring wizard however as the drive that i want to transfer from is a slave drive in what they term as the "new
Computer", i'm at a loss as to how to handle it.

The most important thing i am trying to get to happen is to transfer my settings and data from incredimail. I also want all of my bookmarks and other data too, of course.

Can anyone please offer me a solution of how to use the transferring wizard to transfer from a slave drive to the c drive?

Files Getting Corrupted

Okay i have had a new gateway computer from best buy since mid march. Many a times later a week or two on boot the computer wishes to run disk checker to to root out inconsistencies in the c drive partition? Well i allowed it to run and it began deleting windows files! Now i took it to best buy and they said they used a factory default disk at the expense of wiping all of the files i had accumulated and transferred. I made a factory default disc and i have had to use it many times now because windows 7 has failed to execute.

Now i  am unsure as of what causing this problem but i ran my trial of norton that came installed on it and my free avast antivirus as well as avg there are files that they cannot scan and the five files are all relating to the windows folder in the c: drive. Every one keeps telling me to factpry default the computer but i have five times and it wanted to dick check even after i ran it for a week with no internet connection. So its not a virus. If you have any idea as of how i can fix the problem i would appreciate it.

Files Not Seen In Win 7

Never seen this problem before , my friend copied picture files in folders from win xp  to his new machine with win 7, of all the folders one was missing , it was not shown (seen) in win 7, or any external drives connected to win 7 on external drive nor his old drive connected as the external drive. When put back in to the old pc with win xp the folder was there. The only difference with the other folders he copied was that this folder contained " & " in the name.could that be the problem? I am stumped as to what is the trouble with win 7 not recognizing the folder.

Why Are My Files Disappearing?

Lately i have been having problems with my files disappearing and then reappearing. I'll type up a word document and save it in a specific folder. When i go back to look for it in said folder it is not there. I try to search for it and it is no where in the library. I also try to rearrange the folder in a different ways to find the file. Alas, it still does not show up. The way i have to find it is to go into word and hope that the document is in the recently opened documents. If not, i am
Screwed and have to wait for it to magically show up again. Does any one know what my problem is and how to fix it?

I thought this would be an easy transfer but it keeps telling me "you need  permission to perform this action. You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file"i keep hitting "try again" and nothing ever happens. I just hit cancel and nothing transfers. How do i fix this problem? I'm on the only account the computer has (which is an admin account) and i' getting to the end of my rope with all this.

.exe Files Will Not Open Normally

.exe files will not open normally, they just give a message saying "choose the program you want to use to open this file" i've seen this problem elsewhere but with a few different recommendations. My windows 7 recently started malfunctioning recently after apparently contracting several viruses - i think i've gotten rid of most of the problems by downloading the free version of avg, which was recommended to me by a friend. However, two problems remain:

1. Internet explorer keeps opening erratically and immediately accessing strange websites (i'm sure this is some sort of malware still on my computer). My internet explorer folder won't delete, either (it says i need "permission from trustedinstaller to make changes to this folder").

2. I can't open .exe files normally. Every time i try to (either by double clicking an icon or from the start menu) i get an "open with" window, prompting me to pick an application to open the .exe file with. I can still open applications if i right-click on them and select "run as administrator", but something is still obviously wrong and i'm hoping someone knows what might be happening so they can help.

Oh, and the little tab in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (where the "safely eject hardware" button usually is") is gone.

Access Old My Documents Files

How do i access old 'my documents' files which were located on separate drives under vista with my new windows 7 installation. My vista (32bit) installation was on drive c with photo's located on drive d which was the same physical drive. Separately, i had a second hard drive with all other 'documents' on it, including word & excel files plus savegames etc which were set up by the system. I had pointed 'my documents' to this drive under vista.

I upgraded (though it was a fresh install) to windows 7 (64bit) and in explorer i can see these drives, and they show as loaded with files (100gb out of 150gb used) but a double-click on the drive shows an empty folder. The installation process was clean and i had no problems or errors.

I know that this is how it used to be seen in explorer under vista but the data seems to be completely inaccessible under windows 7. I have tried pointing to it from within libraries. The computer name both before and after the os change was the same and i have used the same password because i thought that might help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Program Files (x86)

Don't know if this happened when smp downloaded the new version or when windows downloaded a new version or when i downloaded j2se runtime environment 5. 0 update 3. Cause all this was done in the same 24hrs. But after all this happened, i am now not able to get into any of the c:program files (x86) it says i may not have permission or unspecified error. The only thing that works is the 64bit explorer and the weather gadget on the desk top. Have you heard of anything like this or would you know of a fix.

Duplicate Of Program Files

I have upgraded my windows 7 from 32 to 64 bit. I did a clean install and did a quick format of the drive first. This went ok, but i have duplicate of "program files". One is the usual program files and the second program files(x86). I want to get rid of this. I find that programs that are being installed that don't give an option of an installation location are by default being put into (x86), which i do not want.

I have tried to delete this file but the user accounts control will not allow me to do this, even though the control slider has been moved to the bottom and the computer rebooted. I am the only user and owner of the computer. The (x86) duplicates all the normal microsoft standard programs taking up unnecessary disk space, and now a large proportion of the self installed programs. I don't mind having to reinstall these if this problem can be solved.
