Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Cannot Change Backup Settings

I set up windows backup to my drive h: passport, but passport wasn't big enough. I want to backup to "networkmybookworld1public". Now when i try to change the backup settings, i only see h: passport or the dvd drive as options, with the message "windows can't find the disk or network location where backup is being saved". I can't browse to or add networkmybookworld1public. It won't let me change or delete any backup settings, or add or point to "networkmybookworld1public.

It also won't let me 'setup backup' i guess since it was already set up once. How do i delete the original setup so that i can re-setup backup? How do i select or point to networkmybookworld1public? When i go to computer, i see network with mybookworld1 under it.

Unable To Change Backup Settings

Config: windows 7 64 bit home premium. After completing a backup to an external hdd (usb), i can no longer get a response from clicking on the backup now button, or "change settings" or " change schedule" links. Windows will complete a backup to the drive only through the auto-play function
When the drive is first plugged in. Windows backup will not function with any other external drives either, only the original one on which the first backup was done.

Cannot Backup To Dvd

I have a compaq presario cq6-215dx notebook pc on which i have clean installed windows 7. (Originally the system came with vista installed). I have repeatedly attempted to back up my system with no success. Each time i"ll get through a disc or two and then i get the "backup did not complete successfully" and event viewer registers the following error- "the device, devicecdrom0, has a bad block. ". 1342 times in the last 24 hrs? This can't be the dvds. I am using sony dvd+rw, 1-4x discs. I've gone through numerous discs and refuse to keep wasting discs.could tis be a controller error. Dvd drive problem. Or a problem with the backup program.

Dell Datasafe Local Backup Vs Windows Backup

I recently purchased a dell desktop with windows 7. One of the first things i did was configure all of my back-upsettings / schedule in windows. I used the recommended windows default settings in regards to what data is being backed up and set my back-up location to an attached external wd drive. All seems to be working fine. That said this machine also has dell factory installed back up software (dell datasafe local back-up) that does it's thing and backs up data to a partition on the "c" drive. My question is if i've set up windows to back up my data to an external drive do i even need the dell datasafe local back up program at all? The concern is this program is using space on my c drive and if the c drive were to crash having the back up info on it seems kind of pointless to me anyway.

Defragmenting Backup Files

I use windows 7 x64 home premium. I routinely backup my files and create a system image, each on a separate drive from my primary drive with the os on it. I defrag my primary drive on a daily basis. Recently i needed to restore some files from the backup drive. All of the data restored successfully, sort of. Some of my documents and music were restored intact, but the information in the folders was out of sequence.

For example, although the entire music album/cd was restored, it was restored in two pieces with 5 songs on one piece and the other five on another in an identical folder name. I wound up with two identical folders and album artwork for patti smith instead of one. I never de-fragged the backups. But after this, i am asking if i should start?

Using Backup To Transfer Files

I have been using xp's backup/restore to keep two computers in different locations in synch. I backup all my data on computer 1 and restore it to computer 2, choosing to restore only if the files on computer 2 are older.

I'm about to buy windows 7. I understand that its backup does incremental backups, not full ones. This won't work for me, because i may have changed a file on computer 1 several days ago and done backups since then, so, as i understand it, the file won't be backed up if i haven't changed it since.

Is there a way to do full rather then incremental backups? If not, i'd welcome suggestions for ways to keep the two computers in synch.copying all the files on computer 1 and then copying them to computer 2 seems inelegant to say the least.

Which Win 7 Backup Files Can Be Deleted?

I've been using windows 7 (and vista) backup for my pcs and laptops to back-up to an external hard drive. The drive has now run out of space and i need to find some room. Windows has automatically created a number of sub-directories on the drive under the pcs' names over the last several months. Can i just delete the older folder(s) to create more space? My concern is that the back-up has been an incremental one and deleting one or more of the older folders will mean that a restore (should it ever be needed) won't work.

Reinstall Backup Files And Programs

I did a system recovery on a computer with a windows 7 home premium upgrade. Before the recovery, i was instructed to do a backup of any files and programs that i wanted to keep. I did a full backup on dual layer dvd+r's. I just finished putting them back on the computer and they are in a "system recovery files" folder on drive c. When i open the folder, it appears that everything is there. When i go to backup and restore, i have no option to access and reinstall the files and programs.

Does Backing Up Files Backup Ms Office?

So i'm pretty sure theres some kind of virus floating around on my hard drive though it doesn't show up on my antivirus or anti-spyware because my laptop has been becoming slower and slower and the screen blacks out on me or just freezes. I've done the hardware check and everything is running fine. I want to do a system recovery and start from scratch again to see if that can fix it but the problem is i am worried that i am going to lose my programs and my activated ms office which i have lost the disk to and the product key. Is there any suggestions on backing up programs for windows vista?

Is It Ok To Move Backup Files / Directories?

I'm in the midsts of doing my first backup on a new laptop running windows 7 professional. I'm backing up to an external 2tb usb drive. The backup is about halfway done, and so far has created files called frank-laptop (my pc's network name) and mediaid. Bin, as well as a directory called windowsimagebackup, in the root directory of the external drive, which the pc recognizes as e:. I'd like to do some manual backups of data from other family computers to this same usb external drive. In order to keep from mixing files up, i'd like to create a new directory on the external drive to move the windows 7 backup files/directories into (say, something like "win 7 backup files").

Can i just use windows explorer to create a new directory on the external drive, and move the visible backup files/directories there? Is there anything special i need to do to let the system know where the files will now be stored? Are there any invisible files i need to worry about? Or does windows 7 itself provide some functionality i should use to relocate the backup files?

Backup Issue - Some System Files Were Skipped

My question about backup in windows 7 is that i did a backup yesterday, windows not only saved data in libraries but it also backed up some files of already installed softwares from "program files" (which is included in system drive c:) but when i restored a software for experiment (after uninstalled it), unfortunately windows didn't back it up and gave a message "some system files were skipped because they cannot restored to original location. To restore these files, try a different location". So what does it mean? Can we not restore installed software? Also what's different between system image and windows backup?

Backup Does Not See External Drive

I was able to use this in vista, but after upgrading to windows 7, backup does not see this external drive, even though it shows it on my network. Backup Onto A Second External Drive

I want a second backup on a second external drive (call it "drive2"), so i'd like to either #1) copy every now and again drive1's daily backup file to drive2, or, #2) perform an occasional separate backup directly onto drive2. I'm confused about issues with both approaches. Original title: i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches. With approach i want to backup my backup onto a second external drive; questions about approaches.

#1, windows doesn't permit me to just drag the backup file icon from drive1 to drive2; instead, i have to open the file and then copy itsunderlyingbackup set files, at the end of which i’m always asked about merging a folder (see graphic at  http://www.Box.net/shared/ykq0nikfqo): do i answer yes or no? (This merge question comes up even when copying just a single backup set file. ) And, can i drag over to drive2 just the most recent backup set file, or does the backup program update older backup set files when it runs, meaning that i would have to copyeverybackup set file anytime i copy between drive1 and drive2?

With approach #2, i can change settings within the backup program and choose drive2 as the destination, but does that affect theexistingbackup set (which i want to continue using) by creating an incremental backup file in the new destination, or does the backup program interpret a new destination as "create a totally new backup file from scratch on that new destination"? (With xp's ntbackup, you could create different "jobs" and different . Bkf files; does windows 7 backup offer a similar choice?)

Internal Drive Not Available For Backup

I had been running vista business x86 and using an internal hard drive to do backups. I upgraded to windows 7 x86 and, after changing to a processor that supported virtualization, i did an install of windows 7 x64, since it wouldn't allow an upgrade. I am now getting all the programs reinstalled and back to where i was with one exception. When i try to setup the backup destination, the internal drive is not available. I am also not able to reformat the drive because of the "trusted installer". What can i do to use the internal drive?

Backup Does Not Allow Backups To Network Drive

Win 7 home premium backup does not allow backups to a network drive but it will allow a restore from network drive. Vista home premium allowed backup and restore to a network drive. I assumed win 7 home premium would have the same capability - wrong. Win 7 allows you to restore from a network drive - so how can you restore if you can't backup there? I thought the win 7 restore capability may have been included for previous versions of backup but it doesn't recognize my old vista premium backups.

Is it possible to restore a backup to a network drive? I created a backup of my win7 rc to a mapped nas. I can only click the restore button if select a location on the c: drive.

Backup To External Drive Failing

Am using windows backup with an external 1tb seagate xtreme freeagent drive, on an esata connection. The drive shows up as d: normally in windows explorer. Backup seems to reach around 57% ("creating system image"), then fails, with no error message. When i check windows explorer, the external drive (d:) has vanished. Scanning for new devices in device manager re-detects the seagate drive, but re-running backup results in same error.

Only workaround which sometimes works is to format the external drive, then re-run windows backup again, but this takes hours and is very manual. Subsequent incremental backups tend to fail again.
Any suggestions please?

Cannot Manage Backup Space On More Than 1 Drive At A Time

Cannot manage backup space on more than 1 drive at a time; can view backups on more than 1 drive at a time. I make image and regular backups to 2 different usb drives - because you do not know when a backup drive will fail. Win7 backup and restore gui allows one to view backups on multiple drives at same time via "select another backup to restore files from".

Manage space only allows to manage space on the currently configured backup drive. Further - if modifying the configuration to select a different drive - you are forced to start a backup before you can manage space on that drive. - "Save settings and run backup" there may be little space on the drive - so i will have to either cancel the backup after started or configure a useless  small backup so that i can then manage space on the drive.

Cannot Access Maxtor Usb Backup Drive

Windows 7 cannot access my maxtor usb backup drive but it shows it is working properly under device manager. It does not show that it is present in windows explorer. How do i get it to use the drive? I have a maxtor one touch external drive using a usb cable connection. I use it for backup. Windows 7 recognized it and created a backup image during install a couple of weeks ago. Since then it does not see the drive in windows explorer. Does not access it for backup. It does show up in device manager and indicates it is working properly. I have unistalled the driver and reinstalled it and the software but it still does not work.
