User Sets File Association Now System Restore Doesn't Work

On a brand new laptop the user copied some word files over, and they opened on the new computer just fine. Then they copied some more .doc files and they could not open them, so (they claim) they choose word as the default file association (which is fine, except it should not have prompted for that in the first place). After that all the word document shortcuts they created on the desktop changed to a shortcut with ie's 'e' symbol - clicking them flashes up a screen that instantly goes away (ie i assume) and ie's download file dialog then opens.

Further, an attempt to open ie acts the same way. Worse, running system restore does the same thing - flash, then ie files downloaded dialog - asking if i want to open one of the files listed (which are the . Lnk files to the word documents on the desktop). So short of doing a full system restore, and also short of manually copying the registry files from the last restore point (which i'm not sure is even possible on a windows 7 drive) what can i do to resolve this mess?

System Restore Does Not Work

I recently had big problems with my dell inspiron 530 and it would not reboot. I finally got to the part of the safe mode where you can do system restore. I tried the 1st restore point and thought everything would work but all of a sudden i get a message that says system restore did not complete because of an error. I tried 2 more restore points and got the same message. Some way the system recovered and booted up the normal way when i started it normally. I would like to know why system restore would not work. Does the antivirus program need to be off or uninstalled? Does windows defender have something to do with this?

File Association Problem

I wanted to see if windows explorer could preview winrar files (.rar file extension) like it does with winzip (.zip file extension) files. So i right clicked on a winrar file and clicked on "open with. " This opened up the "open with" box which says, "choose the program you want to open this file:" there was a check mark in the box marked "always use the selected program to open this kind of file. " I then browsed to the windows directory and chose "explorer.exe" and then clicked on ok in the "open with" box. I started seeing the spinning circle but nothing happened.

The spinning circle would not stop so i rebooted. After the reboot, i noticed that all the rar file icons now looked like the windows explorer icon. The first thing i tried to was going through the same process as before to set the file association of .rar files back to winrar. The problem was that the check mark in the box marked "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" was grayed out and could not be selected.

Windows was blocking me from taking the association away from "windows explorer. "I even tried it in safe mode, but that did not work either. I then went in to the "default programs"located in the start menu. I clicked on associate a file type or protocol with a program. I started looking for the (.rar file extension), but it was not in there. So then i tried uninstalling and reinstalling winrar, both in and out of safe mode, but that did not work. Then i tried was running the system restore, but that failed. I'll have to look into that later, it has failed the last three times i tried because it could not find a file it was looking for.

I read through the post called " problems with "file association" in windows 7 64-bit" on this site, but did not find an answer. I did see something about "to fix the corrupted user profile you may refer the link below:" i followed the link and did the stuff it suggested. I made a new user and copied all of my "user files" to the newly created user. When i logged in, the file association problem was gone, but now i have to reload all of my programs, set up all of my settings, wallpapers, icons, dpi setting. More than i want to do if i can save my other user account.

My computer specs:dell inspiron 1520cpu: intel core2 duo t7500 @ 2. 20ghz windows 7 enterprise 64-bit winrar 3. 70

Notepad++ File Association

I can't get a file association to work with notepad+, but the program works normally otherwise. Other file associations are fine eg i can set . Gif to whatever i like and it will open that program consistently, but setting .xml to open notepad+ has no effect; the program is not listed in "open with", not even under "other programs", despite clicking "browse" then the application name as i would under win xp.

Strangely, right click "edit with notepad+" works, but is clumsy when you need to open dozens of xml files at a time like i do.

Cannot Change File Association

I was stupid enough to set a . Nut file to automatically open with cmd.exe (trying to use squirral to script for left 4 dead 2) and now i cannot reverse my idiotic mistake, anyone got any ideas? I have tried right clicking and going to properties, default program is not there, i can manually open it with notepad by right clicking and clicking open with. But the "always open with this program" box is disabled. I have also tried to change it through control panel/set associations but still
No luck. :( Anyone got any ideas?

Unable To Change File Association

So i'll explain my problem: i upgraded my computer from vista to 7. I then had a problem with a corrupted profile, so i had to create a new one and transfer all my files, and i'm thinking that the problem i've got here is related.

The fact is that i'm unable to change files types associations, but if i make it from the program i'd like to open files with, it works. Here is how i'm doing it (i just don't want one of those stupid answer where someone will try to teach me how to do it the usual way):

-Right click on the file
-Open with
-Chose default program

#The problem exists only if the program i want to set as default isn't in the list of programs appearing at this step

- I click browse
- I browse, and select my file.exe
- "Always utilize this program blablabla" is ticked

#At this point, my program hasn't appeared in the list and i haven't a clue why, so another one is selected in blue.

- And finally i hit ok, and the previous default program is launched, and yet i'm irritated.
I looked for answers on the internet, and it appears that i'm experiencing this because during my new installations, my programs aren't registered normally in hkey_classses_roots, but i'm not so comfortable changing registry, and i'd have to register each one of my programs. So i'm looking for a way to do them altogether.

I also think that it is a permissions problem, but i've got only one user and one account. And it's an administrator one! Thanks to everyone that will give me an answer or at least a hint on this bug!

File Association Checkbox Disabled

I want to permanently set a file association, but the "always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is disabled. There are tons of people on the internet with this problem. Their suggestions are to make a couple of changes in the registry, which i tried but it doesn't enable this check box. I’m an admin on the box; i just want to set this thing rather than having to "open with" every time i want to open my . Chm file. What the heck am i supposed to do to get this to work?

Office 2007 File Association Icons Missing

File association icons missing, namely office 2007 icons and adobe programs. Nearly a month ago my file association icons just disappeared for a select few programs and file types. Currently the programs missing the icon/displaying a blank icon are: itunes, adobe reader 9, adobe audition 3, and all the programs in the microsoft office 2007 suite (word, excel, publisher, etc. ) As well as .doc, .docx, . Xls, . Xlsx, and all other standard microsoft office file type extensions and the adobe acrobat default file extensions. (.pdf)

I have tried all the standards: uninstalling office 2007, re-installing office, restarting before/after installs/re-installs, anything regarding the icon cache, resetting default file types etc. All that is shown is a blank "file" icon however, the program still launches upon selecting the files it's just quite annoying needing to view the file types to determine at a glance what program will open selected file.

Pdf File Association Not Found In Live Mail

If a message received in live mail on a windows 7 home premium 64 bit machine contains a pdf file attachment, that attachment cannot be opened from live mail. Word file attachments and others can be opened.

When the attempt to open the pdf file attachment is made, the message informs that "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. " If the file is saved to the local computer, it can be opened normally, as the file association is correct. This is confirmed by typing assoc .pdf in a command window and receiving the response ".pdf=acroexch.document". How can opening pdf documents from live mail be accomplished without saving them first.

How To Restore Desktop And User Preferences?

I logged on to my computer running windows 7 earlier and instead of loading to my desktop like every other time, i loaded up some default looking windows 7 desktop. All of my user settings, background, desktop icons, and things like drivers for my mousepad are all gone. This happens occasionally and i just have to log out and log back in. But this time it isn't working and it just keep loading me to this generic windows desktop, even after rebooting multiple times.

As far as i can tell, all of the files and programs are still in there, just a bunch of the links, shortcuts and pointers all disappeared too. I am running windows 7, 32 bit. It is on a macbook pro and dual booting. However, i haven't loaded any new software in the last week and i wasnt doing anything with the apple os when this started happening. Any ideas?

System Restore

My current pc came with vista preloaded. I did not receive a cd disk with it. Rather the manufacture had set up a recovery partition for me to restore the system. In addition, vista also gave me the option to make recovery disks which i did. If i upgrade to windows 7 and do a clean install will it give me that same one time option to create the recovery disk for my computer?

Also, when i do install windows 7 will it give me the option to wipe my whole hard drive including the old recovery partition and allow me to create a new recovery partition? I realize that it is the manufacturer that has set up the recovery partition, and i have never had to do it for myself before, so i was wondering if that is some kind of option with windows 7 or if i am on my own to create a new one?

Need To Restore System

I just finished restoring my system for the 10th time in the three months that i have owned this new windows 7 computer. For at least 10 times when i have been advised that the windows 7 operating system has been updated i am not able to get on the internet with the use of internet explorer. After restoring the system to a time before the most recent update i am once again able to get on the internet. Does anyone have any idea on how to stop the need for restoration after an update?

Why No System Restore?

A registry defragmentor program caused my sysem to not be able to boot. The system could not repair itself either. I also tried last known good configuration without results. I tried to do a system restore and had a number of restore points to choose from, but every one i chose gave me an exclamation mark and i could not put a check mark in the c windows box.

I was able to get my system back using another backup routine (image) i was using, but this backup was 3. 5 weeks old and i had 3 restore points for 3 days ago. So what might i do to get this working  in case a similar event happens and my system is unrepairable via the repair tool presented. Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Restore From System Image

I have a hard disk with two partitions, one for my windows 7 installation and one for my media files. I want to make a system image of my windows partition only using the backup and restore feature in windows 7 (a backup of the files on the media partition would require more space than i currently have).

If i create a system image of the windows partition only and use it to restore to the the same hard disk that windows is currently installed on (which also contains a partition with my media files), will i lose the files on the media partition?

It wont let me do a system restore due to the common error below. "System restore could not access a file" and the event viewer shows "an unspecified error occurred during system restore. Additional information: 0x80070005"i notice that norton commonly causes these problems, and i may have a similar issue?I have uac turned off, what i do have is avast free antivirus, and ive tried turning it off before doing a system restore, but as soon as the pc boots avast is back on again, which may prevent restore from doing its job. Has anyone heard of avast buggering up system restore?

Restore System Administration

Also, my user account profile says i am the system administrator. However, ever since i upgraded to windows 7, i have been blocked from changing anything that requires a system administrator account. This is particularly true when i try to create a restore point, which i cannot do because it does not recognize that i have administrator rights.

When i bring up the system window and select system protection, it says that system restore is disabled by your system administrator. Except i am supposed to be the system administrator.configuration and system restore point creation is also disabled by my system administrator.

Anyone have any ideas? Also, how do i move an ntsf partition?

Cannot Complete System Restore

When doing a system restore i get the message that system restore did not complete and no files were changed. I'm running windows 7 on a 64bit computer. I have tried doing a restore from safe mode, from a dos prompt and i have uninstalled my virus protection and firewall and still no luck. My system is operating properly in all respects. I was running some media server software named playon and was having some issues so their tech support told me to change some networking options. I had to uninstall that software and now it will not let me reinstall so i am trying to do a system restore to a point before i changed the network settings.

System Restore Problem

I'm running windows 7 home premium. Up till recently, as far as i know, i've been able to restore from restore points but recently i had problems installing a program and was unable to uninstall it. I tried system restore. On reboot i got a message "system restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point". I've tried other restore points but still get the same message. You can see the actual message window here

http://s8. Photobucket.com/albums/a28/rachelr-uk/?Action=view¤t=systemrestorefailure.jpg .

I've run the system file checker with no problems found and checked that volume shadow copy is running and starts automatically. I've also tried switching sr off and then on but it makes no difference.

System Restore And Updates

I have been trying to uninstall windows liveone care safety scanner because i mistakenly downloaded it and it does not work for windows 7 64 bit computers. It would not uninstall. So i tried restoring my computer to an earlier time. Two questions: the liveone safety scanner is still there and i still can not uninstall it. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it?

The restore point was before the latest windows updates. Would the updates have been deleted by the system restore? I checked to see if i have the latest updates and i do, but i don't understand how that is possible. Any explanation?

Unexpected Shut Down And Restore Point Does Not Work

For a few days i have been having unexpected shut downs. The computer just turns off. I thought it may be due to the heat wave. The room is hot and there may have been brown outs in my neighborhood. But it is not hot now and it still does this. Norton didn't turn up anything in a scan. I tried to go to a restore point from before these problems but upon restart i get an error message saying it could not complete the restore point, probably due to an anti-virus program running. So i turned off norton and tried again and it still won't go to a restore point. Suggestions?

System Restore And Security Updates

Did system restore to a march 22, 2010, as windows explorer had become deadly slow and i was unable to determine why. Seems fine now.

My question is: do i need to download and install again the security updates for windows xp (professional sp3) released since the system restore date? Since the sys restore, the add/remove progams list doesn't list any of the updates done since feb 10 except hotfix -kb979306 and security update - kb975561) although the microsoft windows update service online lists 20 or more that were previously downloaded. I'd appreciate it if someone could shed some light on this for me.

Black Screen After System Restore

I have a samsung n150 its running windows 7 starter and i system restored it. The computer goes through the restore process and seems fine, i put in my password and it goes black, the only thing i can see is the mouse. I can go into safemode and such. I went into safemode with command prompt and tried to system restore again but to find that nothing changed. This netbook doesn't have a disc drive so i don't know what i can do.

All the safe-modes and everything boot a black screen with the mouse visible. When i load windows normally i can pull up task manager and thats visible, and from there i can pull up the internet and everything but the desktop doesn't show up nor does it respond when i click randomly on the black screen and there is not tool bar at the bottom with start and everything.

System Restore Has Been Turned Off By Administrator

System restore has been turned off by your system administrator. I thought my problem was a easy one but not so. I am logged in as administrator windows 7 ultimate, i went to restore my system files and turned them off by mistake, so that i thought was no problem, i did know that it deletes all system restore files, so off i go again to turn them back on and guess what, it says the administrator had to be informed as they turned them off, after trying many ways of doing this, i resorted to no protection on my uac, this did not help, tried a new uac that did not help either, so now i am on my hands and knees hoping that someone out there can help, after such a simple mistake which i was allowed to do because i was administrator, i have gone to not even being able to system restore back on without contacting my administrator!

Lost Office After System Restore

I recently won a computer from microsoft in their 50 pcs in 50 days drawing. It had windows 7 and microsoft office ultimate pre-installed on it. Then the computer crashed about a week ago and i just got it back working today. I had to do a complete system restore and in the process the office ultimate got wiped off the computer. But microsoft did not provide any installation media with which to re-install the office ultimate but they did provide a windows 7 dvd.

They also did not give me a key for the office ultimate but they did for the windows 7. Now i want the office back but have no way to install it again and also no way to unlock it even if i could install it. Is there any way to resolve this problem? Is there a way to get a key and installation media.

System Restore Error 0x80070005

The futuremark benchmark 3dmark vantage includes two installations. After the install, i found that futuremark's registration hurdles were not worth my effort. Instead of a simple uninstall i ran system restore and picked the restore point created by the 3dmark vantage installation [restore point 1]. Upon restart the system restore message box stated, "system restore did not complete successfully.system files and settings were not changed.

System restore could not access a file. Probably because an anti-virus app is running. Disable and retry. Unspecified error. (0x80070005) try again and choose a different restore point. "
Next i uninstalled the two futuremark installations without error. Then i tried sr using the same restore point getting the same error message. Then i tried sr using a convenient restore point from three days prior [restore point 2] but also got the same error message.

I do not use an anti-virus program. Next i disabled windows defender and uac, and restarted in safe mode. I tried sr using restore point 1 but i still get the same error message. It may be that system restore was never run before today (2010-04-11) on this mid-december 2009 installation of 32-bit win 7 hp upgrade. I will think on it. I have used sr by necessity several times in xp on this same desktop [asus m2n32 sli deluxe] and once on my wife's vista laptop.

My system and data partitions are backed up. But i really do not want to re-install the operating system. Win 7 hp upgrade is an annoying installation. Hopefully microsoft has advanced past the tiresome fix all "re-install windows" mantra. Please can anyone show me the procedures to allow system restore to change the registry and files?

I’m trying to do a system restore in win 7 32 bit.

I keep getting the following from all the restore points i try.

System restore failed to extract the file (c:) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x8000ffff)

You can try system restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try an advanced recovery method. For more information, see what is recovery?"

System Restore Points Problem

I'm having problems with system restore on my computer. I had a post about my earlier problem in a different forum on this website, my post was: "i'm using windows 7 ultimate, microsoft office 2007 and my printer is epson lx-300+. I had no trouble printing anything before until now, i can't get my printer to work. I thought it was a driver issue so i reinstalled it but still won't print.

I recently discovered that after i click the ok button to start printing, there at the devices & printers page, specifically at see what's printing page, the document for printing won't show up anymore, it always shows up there if i print something. "

"Strangely i discovered that, if my printer is not connected to the computer, the document shows up at the see what's printing page with the status as printing though my printer is off but as i turn on the printer the document for printing disappears and as i try to print again, it won't show up as long as the printer is on & connected. " I was about to try system restore to restore my settings to an earlier date but oddly enough i can't access any restore points, it says that there are no restore points available. I actually discovered my problem with system recovery a month ago, i had the enabled the "monitoring" option for system restore on my 2 drives both ntfs format.

I can manually make a restore point but whenever i restart my pc all restore points are gone. This happens over & over again. My system does make restore points when changes are made like when uninstalling programs but when i restart my system, like i said, all restore points are gone but the settings remained untouched like my drive can't store restore points, i did allocate 2 gb of disk space for it (i have a 40 gb drive partitioned to 30 & 8 gb. Have you encountered anything like this with windows 7 ultimate?
