My Documents Renamed View Libraries

This is a windows 7 question -ok - this is a little complicated. I have a windows 2003 server in a domain environment. This server houses my users public directories. So under my "users" directory - bob smith has a "bsmith" directory and jane doe has a "jdoe" directory and so on. My users local "my documents" folders are mapped to their respective directory on the server. So if they click on their my documents folder - they are actually looking at their folder on the server. All of my users have a folder with their name and everyone can see and modify each others files.

(This is by design) now that i am bringing some windows 7 machines online - those folders are being renamed to "my documents". They aren't actually renamed - its just a view. Only my windows 7 users folders are being renamed and only my windows 7 users see the renamed folders as "my documents" so now - if i have 10 windows 7 users - and i go to my "users" directory on the server. I would normally see a folder for each person.

But now i see 10 folders that say "my documents" and the non windows 7 users still have their names listed normally. So i now have no idea which of these 10 my document folders is bob smiths. This only looks this way on a windows 7 machines. If i look in the "users" directory from an xp machine - they look normal. So this tells me this is some sort of windows 7 "view" or library. I need to turn this view off. Any ideas?

Only Recent Documents Are Showing Up In Document Libraries

Only recent documents are showing up in the document libraries and in searches. How do i change it back to the way it was? I've been using windows 7 for a few months now. Typically, when i select the documents library, everything in my "my documents" folder is displayed. Last week, only recently viewed documents started showing up there. If i use the drop down option and click on the "my documents" folder, i can again see all of my documents. However, all search utilities i've tried will only show results for documents i've viewed recently. Is there a setting i can adjust to fix this? I have tried removing and re-adding my "my documents" folder to the document library list, but that did not correct the problem. Thanks!

Unable To View Thumbnails Using Detailed View

I am unable to view thumbnails in windows explorer while i am using detailed view. I only can see them when they are extra large. I can't see them in small, not in list, not in medium, just in extra large. I hate them extra large. I want to view them in detailed view. This is what i have done so far:under folder options/view i "unchecked" the "always show icons never thumbnails".

That did not work. I did go through tons of problems regarding thumbnails in the forums, but could not find a solution to my problem. I am using windows 7 professional 64 bit. I never had a problem with thumbnails in windows xp. Now i am struggling and i want to view my thumbnails again. I just don't know what else i can do. I must be missing something in the settings; but what?

Turn Off Libraries

Is there any way to turn off the whole 'libraries' deal? I'm sure it's a very useful feature for some people, but it's really just a pain in the butt for me. I keep my files organized by what they're about, not by pictures vs documents vs sound files, and having every freaking folder change when i change the display type (icons/list/etc) for one folder is really driving me crazy. I've moved the whole 'my documents' folder to my c: drive folder to get around it, but it's still annoying.

So yeah. Is there any way to disable this feature so i can organize my stuff the way i want to? And if not, where can i give microsoft feedback about it?

Change Libraries Drive To D:

Why are the "libraries" in c: drive? Can i change to d:? The "libraries" are set up nicely, but strangely located in c: drive, which is only about 60gb on my laptop. D: drive is 160gb, which is much bigger and able to contain my picture and music files. Why is this? Can this be changed?

Libraries Not Working, Cannot Add New Ones

I just installed win 7 professional (and activated it) and the libraries section in windows explorer doesn't work. Instead of showing the default ones (documents, music, pictures, videos) it displays some links, documents. Library-ms, music. Library-ms, pictures. Library-ms, videos. Library-ms. If i click on them nothing happens. Also these libraries show up the same way in the star menu (as weird links). It doesn't let me add new ones either. If i right-click libraries and choose new, there's no option, it is empty. I include the links to pictures so you can see the problem.

This exact same problem happened when the first windows 7 evaluation copy was released, but it was fixed when the rc came out. But now that i bought the professional edition it happened again. :S

I have win 7 64bit and winrar 3. 93 installed when i go to extract a archive through winrar the winrar dialogue box opens and when i click on the library folder i have duplicate folders listed, it would appear the the higher level in the folder is missing example in libraries i have:-

Folders 2010general - 2010letters

No Access To Media Player Libraries

I have a new windows 7 desktop and an existing vista laptop. I have read several articles on how to set up media sharing with media player12 and feel fairly confident that i have implemented the necessary steps. I have four user accounts that are identical on both machines so when you are logger into one, you can see your files and the public files on the other computer.

When i use media player on my laptop to try to access my pictures on my desktop i do see the library with my name and the computer name. However when i click on it i get a message that says. "Before you can play items in this library, you must first be allowed to access the library".

I'm not sure what this means. Since i can go into windows explorer and see the files i think i should have the necessary permission.

Folder Grouping In Win 7 Libraries

The default documents library for windows 7 includes two folders. When i select the documents library, the contents of those two folders are displayed in the right pane without grouping.

I created a new library for myself, and added folders to it. When i select that library, the contents of the folders i placed in it are shown in the right pane grouped by folder.

So far as i am concerned. The grouping is just clutter, and i'd like the library i created to display like the documents library. Is there any way i can turn grouping on and off in the "arrange by folder" view?

Libraries Taskbar Error - The File Does Not Have A Program Associated

Recently, my computer has started displaying an unusual explorer.exe error message whenever i click on the libraries button that is pinned to the win 7 taskbar by default. Unpinning and repining did not help at all. The message says "the file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel. "

Open Documents In Ie

Recently i have noticed that word and excel documents accessed via ie (7 or 8) do not open in their own application. Instead, they open in what appears to be half browser/half application. Once the document is saved, it is then shown in its native application. This is a change to the way documents used to open in ie, and i was wondering why this change was made.

I know it is browser related because i have tested it on several sites with the same results, but documents opened in firefox open in their native applications. I know this is going to cause a problem with some of my customers who are not very computer literate. Is there a setting that can be changed to avoid this?

Getting My Recent Documents

How to get "my recent documents" in windows 7? I need "my recent docs". I purchased win7pro because i assumed it was created with professionals in mind. People who rely on their computer for their lively hood rely on "my recent docs" for a million things. The "recent items" function does not seem able to locate any but the last version. When an earlier version is shown in he jump folder, windows can't find it. I need to know what i did yesterday, last week, and in 2002. Xp does that, (pro and home b. T. W. ). Please tell me there is a setting some place that i just haven't found. Everyone in my field relies heavily on "my recent docs". I can't believe it is gone.

Can't View Flash

Ok, i have a problem. I've just downloaded ie8, thinking it would help, but the problem occurred in both ie7 & ie8. Ok, so on some sites i visit, flash files won't load. . Swf file extensions mainly. Some sites (like virtual worlds) work. But flash files, and embedded flash files don't. Here's an example.

This link won't show, it shows as a box with an 'x' in it (like a missing picture): www.Gardenpartyworld.com

This link, however, works, it's the actual flash of a virtual world: www.Gardenpartyworld.com/game

I cannot figure out how to make normal flash files visible in ie8, any response is appreciated.

Not Able To View Online Videos

Problem viewing internet videos, i recently purchased a toshiba satellite laptop with windows 7 (including wmp) installed. My browser is internet explorer. When i try to watch video on news channels (or youtube, or any other medium), the video will often stop midway, or after several seconds, and never resume. One channel prompted me to download flash player, which i did, but it has made no difference. The only system protection i have installed is microsoft security essentials. I've read several of the other posts which seem related to this, but they don't seem to have the answer i need. I'd sure appreciate any advice to address this problem.

Cannot View Folders And Programs

Ive got issues with windows 7 that are progressively getting worse. It began with live messenger, affects mozilla and has now affected opening general folders. When i attempt to open a folder, it appears as an icon in the taksbar, and when i click to view it, it expands onto the screen, but keeps moving to the right of the screen and off the side almost instantly, meaning i cannot view it.

The folder/program are always active at the time, because when i have multiples open (eg watching movies in mozzila pages) i can see the thumbnails changing and moving etc. I managed to rid the mozilla problem by completely reinstalling it, but no luck with msn, and now i cant even open my computer or other folders. However when i run windows in safe mode i do not have this problem. When i right click the icon/s on the task bar i am only given options to view frequent folders (which does not work), pin to task bar, close window and open explorer(which also does not work). Ideas?

My Documents Shortcut Does Not Work

I am in a school environment where we do not allow students to access the c drive. We also redirect students my documentsť folder to a network file storage server. We are in the process of converting to windows 7 and found that when a student tries to access their my documentsť from their desktop they get an access denied message.

We would like to keep students from accessing the c drive but allow them the use of the desktop short cut for their my documentsť. We are pretty sure this is due to the fact that the my documentsť folder is now a subfolder on the desktop. Is there a simple fix to allow students access only to their my documentsť folder?

Access Old My Documents Files

How do i access old 'my documents' files which were located on separate drives under vista with my new windows 7 installation. My vista (32bit) installation was on drive c with photo's located on drive d which was the same physical drive. Separately, i had a second hard drive with all other 'documents' on it, including word & excel files plus savegames etc which were set up by the system. I had pointed 'my documents' to this drive under vista.

I upgraded (though it was a fresh install) to windows 7 (64bit) and in explorer i can see these drives, and they show as loaded with files (100gb out of 150gb used) but a double-click on the drive shows an empty folder. The installation process was clean and i had no problems or errors.

I know that this is how it used to be seen in explorer under vista but the data seems to be completely inaccessible under windows 7. I have tried pointing to it from within libraries. The computer name both before and after the os change was the same and i have used the same password because i thought that might help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Moving My Documents Folder

Shortly after installing win 7 64 i moved "my documents" by some simple method i don't now recall (it was 6 months ago). I need to correct the situation now. Sometimes i have software installs fail because they are looking for h:my documents and it no longer exists. I have also removed hard drives since then. I also want to setup for a ssd drive keep the os and program folders on c: but data on a different drive. I still have c:usersbmacdmy documents right click doesn't show the location and move option. Permissions shows i have full control and i am an administrator on the system.

My registry shows entries like this for my documents personal reg_expand_sz h:my documents bruce but like this for others my pictures reg_expand_sz%userprofile%pictures i no longer have an h: drive but have all my data stored on f: in the root. Can i search and replace my registry and replace h:my documents bruce with f:?

Infinite Documents Folders

I have what seems like an infinite chain of documents folders, one inside of another. Forever. And ever. I've deleted probably a hundred of them. Where did they come from and why can't i delete all of them at once? Had this problem in vista but the folders weren't infinite, they just existed and wouldn't let me open them. Now that i have 7 they have become infinite. Can anyone help me?

Because my friend tried working on it and he named the files he moved them to "stuff you need to sort and delete" and "needs to die. " He also did it because it annoyed him severely.

I have tried deleting the top most folder, but i get a "source path too long" error message. "The source file name(s) are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter name(s) before attempting this operation. "

I don't really understand why or how they got created, or what's in the last one (if there is one!). How can i just delete all of them? Forever?

Should I Save Documents As Docx?

In light of the lawsuit that microsoft seems to have settled with the canadian company, it is unclear to me if i should continue saving documents in word 2007 as docx or even i will be able to use the docxs i have already saved. I am concerned because i just came across something on the web [quoting]

'the ruling means microsoft can't sell versions of word that can open documents saved in the .xml, .docx, or .docm formats that contain custom xml. Those formats were at the heart of the patent dispute.docx is the default format for the most current version of word, which is included in microsoft office 2007. Custom xml is used by businesses to link their corporate data to word documents'

I gather that since i don't have any corporate data which i knowingly link to my documents, i should be ok. But, i wish someone could explain this.

I like word 2007, and appreciate its advantages; indeed, i have come to appreciate the ribbon. (And docx does have it advantages over.doc in that the files are considerably smaller)

Redirect My Documents Folder

I did as i found to redirect my documents to an alternate location on my drive "c" and something strange happened ( windows 7 home premium) went to usersyourloginnamedocuments/properties/location tab/move and the chose a target folder "esteban" which i had created before.

Now the strange stuff, the folder "esteban"was replaced by "my documents" in the new location and is now not visible. Basically what win 7 did is not only point to the new folder but replace it.
This behavior i did not see in win xp in which the folder would remain even though my documents pointed to it.

I tried to backtrack and redo everything. I restored the default location of the my documents folder and now i noticed that the new folder that was created before in "c"is still there and now it can't be erased, so back to scratch. I'd appreciate your comments.

My Documents Is Hidden In Another Folder

In vista they changed things so i couldn't find my documents without opening another folder called "documents. " In windows 7 it's now been renamed "my documents" but that's still hidden in another folder. I'm having trouble finding things quickly because of all these "improvements. " What is everyone doing to quickly find things in the "my documents" folder? It doesn't look like i can even change the icon to something that'll stand out for me.

Multiple My Documents Folders

I have just upgraded from windows vista to windows 7, i note tha there are two my-documents folders in the c:/users/myname/. One of the two contains the files that i want and is accessible in both this folder and the libraries/documents folder. The second my documents folder is locked and even tho i am the only user and have full administrator privileges i can not see whats in it.

I checked the properties of the folder in "libraries/documents to see if it matched either or both folders under users. It didn't show for one of the folders so i couldn't compare them to determine which contained my files. One of the two folders is not necessary but i don't know which to delete and if its the one i can't access, how do i delete it?

File Organization In List View

I just bought a new computer which has windows 7- i've used xp for the last 8 years on various computers, and there are many things which are extremely jarring. I've managed to figure out, tolerate, or get rid of most of the problematic areas, but i really can't figure this one out.

When i put folders into list view (my default since windows 95), all the files in folders are listing left-to-right (for example, amy.doc, amy2.doc, and boy.doc are all on the top of the file listing, and then the next line starts with boy2.doc, curmudgeon.doc, etc. ). Ever since windows 95, they've listed up-to-down (amy.doc, then amy2.doc directly below that). Sorry if that's confusing- i'm stuck on an old laptop with no imaging or ftp programs, so i can't provide any screen-shots of what i mean.

I can't stand this new way, i can't find anything because of it, and if there is a way to change it to the old way, i would very much love if someone could tell me how.

I know the server is working, as i can view the movie on another computer using the same network connection i am using now. The video continues to say "connecting to media", then finally says "ready" but doesn't play the movie. The error says that it encountered an error while attempting to play the file. If i go to web help i get this error message windows media player c00d11b1 my sound device is not having an issue, so i don't see why that would be the problem.
