Dual Boot 7 On Internal Hdd And Xp On External Usb Connected Ide

One of my laptops is an old acer aspire 5610. I want to have a dual boot system, 7 and xp, but 7 on the internal hdd and xp on the external usb-ide hdd, and by that, i mean a 100gb ide hard disk placed into a hdd enclosure, connected to the computer through usb. It also has separate power supply. The internal notebook's hdd is also ide.

I have read that installing windows on external usb-ide hard disk may be possible, depending on my mainboard configuration. I have already checked my configs and it *does* support usb-ide boot up to be first priority. Anyway, since testing it would be really time consuming (to try to dual boot, and if failed, roll back everything) i want to ask your opinions, do you think is that even possible?

Ide Hard Drive Connected Via Usb To Ide/sata Adapter

I have an old maxtor 9 1303d6 ide drive which is connected via a usb to ide/sata adapter and an active usb hub. The device worked fine under vista 32 ultimate. After doing a clean install of windows 7 ultimate and subsequent updates, the device is no longer seen in windows explorer. Device manager does see the hard drive, but the usb controller section of devman now shows an unknown device.

(I suspect that this is the usb to ide/sata adapter) the device is accessible using a hard disk recovery utility which can read the maxtor drive. I've tried to unininstall/reinstall and have moved the adapter from port to another on the hub. The device returns a code 43 error and i've tried the suggested kb updates with no luck.

Copy From Ata / Ide To Hdd With Ide To Usb Cable

I am trying to transfer files from an old hard drive (xp, ata/ide drive) to my win 7 machine (w7 pro, dell laptop). I only have the hdd from the xp machine, so i cannot go in and have the user share all files, etc. I do have an ide to usb cable and a means to hook up the drive to a power source. While i was able to copy some files (music, etc. ), The actual documents (drive:documents and settings user-name) are protected. I know the password but i am not given the opportunity to enter it.

When i click on the directory, it says: you don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder. So i click continue and the address bar takes forever to load but nothing comes up. No prompt for pwd, nothing. Any ideas?

3.5" Ide Hard Drive Connected To Vista Usb Problem

Why can i see my 3. 5" ide hard drive when connected on the ide cable in xp but not when connected to a vista usb? Yes the drive has failed diagnostics. If i do cable select and put it on the ide cable (old style xp computer 3. 5" hard drive) i can browse to it. When i put it on a usb (to access it from vista modern machine 2. 5" drive) windows disk management says failed to initialize. I right clicked and chose initialize disk. I am not talking about booting from it. Just want to retrieve data.

Cannot Find External Usb Hdd

I have just bought a new dell inspiron n5010 with windows & 64 bit. However i cannot get it to connect to my maxtor basic 500gb external usb drive. The drive works fine with my other vista laptops and when connected to the dell the light comes one and the drive spins suggesting the drive knows it is connected. The hdd has its own power supply. However nothing shows up on the dell.

Nothing in disk management and nothing in device manager. I have tested all the usb ports on the dell with a flash usb drive and they recognize that no problem. All the ports also recognize a usb mouse. I have raised this with dell who told me to reformat the usb hdd to ntfs (!). Needless to say that made no difference. Anyone got any ideas?

External Usb Hdd Not Recognised By Win 7

External usb hdd not recognized by win 7, and no longer recognized under win xp. Maxtor usb 300gb external hdd working fine on windows xp. Unplugged and attached to new windows 7 pc. Os responds by saying device found and working properly. I use the disk to download assorted files.

Then moved cpu a few feet (did not switch off or move usb hdd). Reboot, and usb hdd not seen as a working disk. Seems very unlikely that hdd damaged at this time. Manage disks shows the disk apparently working but not "initialized". Right click to initialize. Hour glass shows for ~2 seconds, and goes away, but disk not initialized.

Reattach to old win xp computer, and now looks the same as on the win 7 machine, not initialized and not unrealizable.gots lots of data on that hdd which i would like to keep, so have you guys got any new ideas?

External Hdd Not Recognized By Usb Port

I have an external hard drive that is not being recognized by all of my usb ports on my laptop. When i connect to my third port, the computer recognizes the device and i am able to access the files on it. But, when i try to hook it up to the other two ports (located on the back of my laptop) the hd is not recognized. It receives power, however, because the power light comes on. Whats even weirder is that other devices, like my mouse and my ipod, are recognized by the back ports.

When i plug the external hd into these back ports, nothing happens, no "unrecognized device" messages or anything. I have tried a number of fixes, like reinstalling the usb drivers and updating the external hd's driver (its a toshiba). I don't know why the external hd is being recognized by one particular usb port and not the others! Any ideas?

Usb External Hdd File Transfer Stops

I have a dell xps m1530 laptop. I upgraded to w7 pro 32 bit via a clean install from vista home premium. My external usb  hdd (freecom toughdrive pro 320gb) used to work fine, and still does on other computers, including xp, vista and another w7 desktop machine. On my upgraded laptopi get problems transferring large files from the usb drive, the drive light goes out (but i can still hear it whirring), the copy operation hangs, and i can no longer browse through the drive in windows explorer. Bizarrely the drive still shows up in "safely remove hardware".

It also shows up still in device manager, with no warning symbols next to any device. I've tried seeing if the drive shows up in disk management, but that won't start unless i unplug it. My problem seems similar to the well documented problem with external drives on w7 64bit and nvidia chipsets with over 4gb ram. That issue has a hotfix. My system is 32bit though. I tried the hotfix just in case but to no effect. Any ideas microsoft?

External Hdd And Dvd Drive Loose Usb Connection

I just bought an acer aspire asa3810tz with windows 7 pre-installed. In addition i have an external hdd (wd 500 gb) and a iomega superslim dvd usb drive. When i plug them in they are recognized, and i can sometime use them for a while, but then suddenly the connection is lost.

I have searched every where for a solution, but the solutions i have found so far was about nvidia chipsets and making sure that the computer was not allowed to turn off the usb ports. Nothing have though help.

I have tried updating windows until no more updates were available and updated drivers based on drivers from acers support pages but so far with no luck. In case there is other solutions out there, then please just point me to them and i will try them out.

I also saw an answer in which it was requested to create a log and so i did hoping i could use it, but unfortunately i did not understand it. In case someone can uses that usb trace i also put it on skydrive: http://cid-d6ee7fade4f53730. Skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/. Public

Standard Dual Channel Pci Ide Controller Driver

I am attempting to install the windows 7 rc onto my pc. The compatibility check is fine so i try the install. I choose custom because i want a fresh start, not an upgrade. When i select the hard drive (one drive, one partition), it says that "windows cannot be installed on disk 0 partition 1". The details say:

Windows cannot be installed to this disk. Windows needs the driver for device [standard dual channel pci ide controller]. Click 'load driver' and load the required device driver. I tried copying the drivers that xp pro is using with no luck. I copy them to a flash drive and then select them in the install ui. It then just goes back to the same message.

Standard Dual Channel Pci Ide Controller Driver Upgrade Fails

I am trying to upgrade my vista ultimate 32-bit to windows 7 ultimate 32-bit. The upgrade advisor showed no issues except for itunes (which i ignore). After starting the installation i get the following message from the compatibility check and the installation aborts: the following issues are preventing windows from upgrading. Cancel the upgrade, complete each task, and then restart the upgrade to continue.

For these items, make the following changes: install updated drivers for the following devices. Open control panel and search for "update device drivers". Ide ata/atapi controllers: standard dual channel pci ide controller. I tried to find a driver but no luck. Can you advise on how i need to proceed. I currently have the microsoft driver v 6. 0. 6001. 18000 dated 21/06/2006 installed

Boot Failure On Moving From Native Ide To Raid

Moving from native ide to raid onchip sata type causes windows boot failure.

I installed windows 7 a few months ago and the install went rather well. I installed windows 7 on a dedicated sata hdd (c drive) and i have another sata drive that i keep my audio and video files on (d drive). Well. . . Today i decided to make a change.

I bought two new hdd's that i'd like to run in raid-1 that will replace my current d: drive. So, i crack open the manual for my motherboard (gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h) and it says i need to change the following in the bios:

Under the "integrated peripherals" menu set "onchip sata controller" to "enabled" (it was already enabled), secondly set "onchip sata type" to "raid" (it was "native ide"), lastly set "onchip sata port4/5 type" to "as sata type" (it was unset).

So, i've noticed that after i change "onchip sata type" to from "native ide" to "raid" and reboot my pc that windows doesn't load :-/  instead, it loads the "windows startup recovery manger" which runs for a while and then indicates that it cannot repair the problem. Going back into the bios and changing the  "onchip sata type" back to "native ide" allows me to successfully boot windows 7 again.

So, what gives?  I really don't understand what "native ide" means, or for that matter what "onchip sata port4/5 type" means in the bios, but i need to change these settings so that i can build my new raid-1. Can you tell me what's going on and how i might progress. . .

I think that maybe i need to install the sata controller driver from the motherboard manufacturer so that windows 7 can recognize the hard drive. . . But that's just a guess. If that's the case i guess the question becomes, how do i install the sata controller drivers after windows 7 has already been installed.

Dual Boot Boot Problem After Resizing Win 7

Boot problem on dual boot after resizing windows 7 (32bit) switched from drive w: to drive g: i have a dual boot system that boots into win 7 (64) (c:drive) or win 7 (32) (w:drive). I needed to increase the size of win7 (64) drive and in order to do so i needed to move the win 7 (32) partition. Now i can still boot into win 7 (64) with no problem but when i boot into win 7 (32) it windows states that it is not a genuine copy and it is actually on drive "g:"! Anyway to change it back to "w:" because i believe this is the problem.

Dual Boot - Move Boot Image To Second Drive

I have a problem with two different drives both running win7, one 32 the other drive64, on a dual boot system. I want to pull the win32 drive, but it also has my boot information for the win64 drive. When removed it will not boot. I have been working on this for 5-6 weeks. I want to remove the win7/32 and put the boot image of win7/64 on the second drive.

I booted from the win764 install dvd, and went to there pair your computer. The placethat displays the operating systems installed, none will show. I have tried bootsect from the command prompt. It seems to work, but tells me no partition on the second drive. Or on another attribute used, it can not find the path to the drive. I have tried rebuild bcd, fixmbr, etc.

External Hdd Corrupted

I use 2 external 250gb hdd's with my laptop to backup files from the office server and desktop machine. One evening i left in a hurry and closed the lid and hurriedly removed all usb devices. When reconnecting the drives (to the same laptop) i did not pay attention to the usb ports and in fact they were connected opposite to original. After working for a while i tried to access the external hdd's but was unable to. I tried swapping the drives around but it seems too late.

One of the drives could not be accessed at all and i am currently trying to recover important live files from it. The other drive reported that the recycle bin of the drive was corrupt and i accepted the message to "repair". I still cannot access the files on that drive and may have to go through the file recovery process on that one too, unless there are any suggestions?

File Transfer To External Hdd

External hdd: adata nh-92 500gb
Computer: asus g51jx

I'm trying to move an iso file from my desktop to the aforementioned external hdd, but when i drag the file over to the hdd, i get a window that pops up saying that "the file is too large for the destination file system. " Is the problem really because the file is too big (7. 86 gb), or is there something that might be wrong with my computer? I think it may be because of my laptop because i got this file from my friend's external hdd, so if he could copy it on to his external, why can't i?

Lost Files From External Hdd

Recently i have bought a new computer with windows 7 32bit. With it i am using an external wd hard drive(fat 32) that i had been using with my previous win xp computer. I had been using this drive to store documents, movie/dvd images, my music collection and family photographs. The problem started when i thought the best solution to transfer some music files from my old computer fixed hard drive to my new computer, was to transfer them by plugging in my external hdd via usb into my old computer. The transfer went ok but when i opened explorer all that was displayed was the files that i had transfered and all my previous files(docs movies music and family photos had disappeared. I then ran scan disk to no avail.

When i run disk cleanup i am told there are 252gb of old chkdsk files obviously these are my files, but i don't know how to restore them. I have downloaded two data recovery programs (recuva and diskdigger) these programs each took about 7 hour to run, but neither did what i wanted. Any ideas?

Dual Boot - 1 Xp And 3 Win 7 Boot Choices

I've installed win 7 on my d drive, with win xp still on c, with the idea of having a dual boot system. Due to installation problems, i now show the xp boot choice, and 3 win 7 boot choices, with only the most recent valid. How do i purge the b. Boot.ini doesn't appear to be relevant. Win 7 utility boot rewriter program to re-point boot to ntldr will wipe out all pointers to win 7 for booting, but comes back with an extra win 7 pointer, the next time i load win 7.

System Process Locking External Hdd

I have a seagate freeagent desktop 750gb external hdd connected via usb port. When i connect the device to windows, it is immediately locked by a system process that i cannot shutdown. I ran some sys-internals tools and found the culprit.

C:>handle h:

Handle v3. 2
Copyright (c) 1997-2006 mark russinovich
Sysinternals -

System pid: 4 1c8:

H:$extend$rmmetadata$txflog$txflogcontainer000000000000000000002
System pid: 4 288: h:$extend$rmmetadata$txf

I am aware that these files are part of transactional ntfs system which was present in vista, im unsure if win 7 has this same feature or an updated version.

I cannot delete these files since they are protected operating system files, i cannot unlock the process locking them so how am i supposed to safely eject my external drive. I have another external drive, a small wd passport which does not get locked by windows in the same manner therefore i have concluded that these system files on my external are remnants of vista (my previous os). My wd passport was never connected to a computer running vista.

Please do not tell me to format my drive because it's filled with data i cannot backup to an alternative right now. This is beyond infuriating, i have been trying to solve this issue on my own for days trying numerous methods.

Code 28 - Missing Driver For External Hdd

If anyone could assist me with the following problem i would be grateful recently purchased a western digital elements portable external hdd and when i went to "plug and play" i got the code 28 error saying there was no driver for the device. Cannot Boot From Hdd

Just installed windows 7 pro upgrade onto a hdd previously containing windows xp sp3. Windows 7 runs absolutely fine as far as i can tell. However the system has been booting to dvd, which has then passed over to the windows 7 install. When changing the bios settings back to boot from hdd first, i get the error "ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt, please reinstall". As far as i can tell, this is a hangover from the old xp installation, and windows 7 is not even trying to start. I've run the startup repair service from the windows 7 dvd once and all that did is unnecessarily run a system restore.

Video Hardware Error Appears When External Monitor Is Connected

Video hardware error message appears when an external monitor is connected to the laptop and i move the mouse after windows 7 has turned off the display (after 10 minutes according to "balanced" power plan). I run windows 7 professional 64-bit on my dell xps m1530 laptop and also use an acer v223w external monitor connected through hdmi/dvi cable. The graphics card is a nvidia geforce 8600m gt with 256mb. I have the latest graphics card driver (version 8. 16. 11. 8681) and monitor driver installed.

Everything works fine, except that i always get a video hardware error when i move my mouse to get the display back after windows 7 has turned it off (after 10 minutes according to "balanced" power plan). Sometimes the whole system crashes and i get a blue screen. I didn't have this problem two weeks ago when i was still running vista 32-bit. What should i try to solve this problem, other than disabling the "screen turn off" option in the power plan?

Trouble Using An Ide To Usb Cable

I just built a new computer. I used an ide to usb cable to upload legacy files to my new hard drive. That worked very well with an older hard drive; my computer saw a "usb device" and enabled drivers for it; i was able to upload the files. After hooking upa newer ide hard drive (the one from my most recent older computer), my computer shows it in control panel as a usb device, declares that "it is working properly";

I even get the "beep" when connecting the usb; but it doesn't show up in windows explorer like the first drive did. I know this one is working; even my computer is indicating that; it just doesn't show up as a drive in windows explorer so that i could pull files across from it. Any ideas?

Dual Boot - Can't See Win 7 Drive After Removing Other Boot Drive

My mobo (msi p7n diamond 780i sli / 570i sli) has a sata raid controller providing 6 sata interfaces
These are organized thus.

Sata 1 - [partition 1 - windows xp] [partition 2 - windows 7 beta (64bit)]
Sata 2 - ocz vertex - windows 7 home (64bit) retail version
Sata 3 - mirror a
Sata 4 - mirror b
Sata 5 - mirror a
Sata 6 - mirror b

The system was originally running xp on sata 1. I added a partition to sata 1 and installed windows 7 beta some weeks ago. The system dual booted to xp or win 7 beta fine. I then added the ocz vertex drive and installed the win 7 retail version, and i am able to dual boot to all three systems just fine.

However - i really want to do away with the xp and win 7 beta partitions and just run with the ocz drive. However if i disconnect the drive from sata 1 the system will not boot up. Can't find ntldr or bootmgr or something similar. I have changed the boot sequence in the bios to point at just the ocz drive - but it just won't boot from it.

Ide Hard Drive (usb 2.0) Not Recognized At Computer Startup

Ide hard drive in external enclosure (usb 2. 0) not recognized by windows 7 at computer startup, but recognized if it is rebooted after windows 7 is done loading. I have a western digital 500gb pata (ide) hard drive in an enclosure. I leave the enclosure on at all times since it has a cooling fan.

However, if for whatever reason i need to reboot my system, windows 7 never recognizes this drive unless i turn off and on my enclosure. Once i reboot my enclosure, windows 7 recognizes the drive and tries to autoplay. I would like w7 to recognize my drive at startup so that i don't have to reboot my enclosure every time i reboot my computer. What can i do to fix this?

Dual Boot

I am currently running windows xp and need to upgrade for school. My computer has a 120 gb harddrive split into two partitions. Can i use the other partition that xp is not on to install and run windows 7? My primary drive is listed as os c: and the other one is listed as data d:. My system is as follows:

Emachine el 1200-01e. I meet all the system requirements except for the ram, which i will be upgrading anyway. Will it be better to buy a new computer if i can't install windows 7 on the other partition or should i perform a clean install? The clean install worries me a bit because i can't be without a computer very long as it is needed for online schooling.
