Host Program Files And Users Folder On Different Drive

Does anyone know of a way i can 'host'(maybe the wrong term) my program files folder on a different drive? My setup is a 30g ssd(windows) and a 2tb raid(partitioned d:/ e:/ f:/)

I know you can mount partitions in empty ntfs folders, but is there a way to mount them as the program files folder? Same with users folder so windows acts as though that is the folder? Why wont this f*n thing work.

Program Files X86 Folder On Different Partition

Can i create another set of program file folders on another drive in order to save space on my c: drive? Details below:i am a new user to windows 7 64 bit. I setup my computer to run windows 7 on an intel x25m ssd and created a mirrored raid using two other hard drives. The ssd runs my c: drive and my raid has my e: drive. I am limited to 80gb on me c: drive.

I would like to install large applications that i use infrequently on my e: drive using new program files and program files x86 folders. My goal is to save space on my c: drive for important apps like web browsers and media players. Would i mess anything up if i have 2 versions of the program files folders? Would windows realize that the program files x86 folder on my e: drive is for 32-bit applications?

Editing Xml File In Program Files Folder

I have a .net program that reads an xml file located in the application startup folder. Under windows xp, i can simply go in and edit this file to change settings, etc. In windows 7, it is driving me crazy. It looks like i am editing it (running notepad as administrator) and writing the file back to the folder. But then i start the program, and the settings remain unchanged. I've even tried deleting the xml file completely to no avail - the program should give me an error if the file cannot be found (it does this correctly under xp), but it somehow seems to find the original file even though i cannot see the file in windows explorer or find it from a dir command in a dos box.

Change Folder Name For Users Account

I set up my computer with account name "vdewan", and then changed it to "stuti" the c:/users/vdewan did not get renamed. I have tried to rename this folder to c:/users/stuti but rename is not an option on rt click of mouse.

Any ideas, i spent 2 hours with online chat with tech support but the kept giving me solutions like. Click on control panel, user accounts, change your account name. Sorry already did that, that is not the prob. Then they offered rt click on the folder, click rename. I already tried that. Log on as admin. I am admin. Stuti is an admin account, very frustrating!

Cannot Create Folder In Users Me App Data

Cannot create folder in usersmeappdata.
Applies to: windows | windows 7 | programs

I have an old application that creates a temp folder in usersmeappdataemp

When i log in as a local user, the application has no problems creating the temp folders necessary to run. However, when i login with a domain login (with domain admin permissions) the application cannot create folders.

My domain is running at the windows 2003 functional level, and has schema 47 (2008) installed.

I have tried:

Taking ownership of the folder
Giving "everyone" full control of the profile
Being enterprise admin
Running as administrator
Uninstalling and reinstalling
Making the domain users members of the local administrator group.

None of these things has helped. I am at the end of what i know to do. I currently have a case open with the software provider, but this doesn't seem like a problem with their application, since it works just fine as a local user.

How To Make A Program Available To All Users?

How do i make a program available to all users if the program was installed for one user. Basically the problem is that i created another user account but only a few random applications show up on it and i'd really hate to have to reinstall some +50 programs so my computer can function normally on my secondary user account. I am able to locate many of the installed programs by snooping around in explorer and have been able to run a few by creating shortcuts, but many of them (spybot, itunes, google chrome, the list goes on!) Do nothing when the .exe is opened and are rendered useless (on that account).

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Download Programs To Default Folder "program Files" 32-bit Or 64-bit

I have been confused if programs automatically download to the optimum "program files" for 32-bit or 64-bit or do i have to select which if the two program files i want it in? It seems everything has been going into the x86 file. I don't want to just move them all over to the 64-bit file if they really belong in the x86 file, but i am sure my new photoshop programs belong in the program files file yet they seen to have downloaded into the program files (x86) instead. Also, how am i to know which programs are better suited for either folder?

Update: i tried copying the photoshop file and moving it to the 64-bit folder but it won't let me do so, saying a file is in use somewhere. I do not have any files from this open; i even restarted the computer to completely close anything that might be open and i get the same message. Is this maybe because it does not belong in the program files folder for 64-bit programs? Any other hints on how i can move this program, along with adobe premiere elements (for making videos) that gives me the same message? I have been told these programs would work better running as 64-bit programs so that is why i want to move them.

Custom Install - Program-files And Program Files X86

Custom install from windows vista hp 32 bit to windows 7 hp 64 bit leave 2 program files - "program files" and "program files (x86). Mostly same files in either folder. If x86 is needed, i don't mind but why duplicate entries with items like windows mail. I tried to to delete program files x86 without any success, and i would like to delete system-32 files in the windows folder plus any other 32 bit related items, if possible.

I do not want a system with duplicate and redundant files. Because two items that i downloaded and installed appear in both program files, i'm suspending any further actions on the installation until i'm fortunate enough to receive some help and/or advice from this forum.

How To Prevent Users From Ejecting Sata Drive ?

Hi, i've a second sata drive (wdc wd15ears-00z5b1 if it matters), that windows 7 thinks is removable, and shows in the "safely remove hardware and eject media" applet, allowing any user to "eject" it. The hard drive is not removable, but sometimes users (non-admin) occasionally click "eject" it and remove from the system, forcing me to restart computer to bring it back. How do i disable this functionality and tell windows 7 this drive is not removable and may not be "ejected" by my users?

Can I Delete Program From Program-files (x86) Directory ?

Why is windows media player in the program files directory (i assume for 64 bit programs) and also in the program files (x86)? It runs ok from either. Can i delete it from (x86) and other duplicates as well? I also note that office 2007 seems to be in the (x86). Does that mean it is not a 64 bit program?

Programs Files Vs Program Files (x86)

What is the difference between the "program files" folder & the "program files (x86)" folder, in c drive? Various programs seem split almost equally between the 2, after i upgraded from vista to 7, except that internet explorer is in both, meaning that when i "open with" for a text file i get ie listed twice. Can i move everything to one or other of these & delete the other one? Is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit programs or something like that?

Cannot Delete Folder With Files In It

Every time i try to delete a folder with files in it i get "you need permission to perform this action". I used a fresh install on win7, it's the 64-bit version, professional. This happens anytime i try to delete folders with something in them. I made the folders, so i can't see that it's a permission thing. As well, i can go into the folder and just delete the files, and when that is done, i can delete the folder, which means to me that the files were not in use. Suggestions?

How To Change Ie Temp Files Folder?

I am using ie8. I have clicked on a link to download a small video file. The file downloads ok - well, the progress bar goes from 0 to 100%. Then i get an error message saying "windows cannot find the . Make sure you typed the name correctly, then try again. "

That's an interesting error, since i didn't actually type anything.

Ie's temporary files location is set to c:usersjeffreyappdatalocalmicrosoftwindowstemporary internet files, which exists, but is a protected system file.

The file in the error message is c:usersjeffreyappdatalocalmicrosoftwindowstemporary internet fileslowcontent. Ie5o4c0mhonfilename. Wmv

The directory low does not exist. Why is ie trying to download to a nonexistent directory and how do i fix this problem?

Files Missing From My Documents Folder

I had set my wife up as a user on my windows 7 pro laptop. She created and saved many files and folders in her my documents folder. Then my niece needed to use the laptop for her college nursing courses because she didn't have microsoft office 2007 on her personal computer at home, so i added her as a user and i also password protected my wifes files by adding a password to her profile. Fter i got the laptop back from my niece i removed the password from my wife's profile. Now, when she opens her my documents folder, all of the files and folders she had saved are missing. Where did they go? And, how can i get them back?

Cannot Drag Files Into Folder Shortcuts

I have had a number of synched folders set up to transfer files from my pc's to my whs. Recently, i found that i could not drag/drop files into the folder on one of my win7 machines (i haven't played with the xp machine). I made shortcuts of other (non synched folders) and found that i cannot drag files into anything but a "standard" folder now. This was not the case just a few days ago.
Did something get turned on? An update change things?

Error - File Or Folder Open Or In Use By Another Program

I am using windows 7 64-bit on an asus laptop, and recently ran into a strange problem. I have a shared hard drive on a desktop pc that stores all of my working files. I often work from the laptop across my wireless network, working on files stored on my desktop hard drive. The desktop is running win xp professional.

When i try and move a folder on the desktop hard drive using the laptop running win 7 i am getting the error"file or folder open or in use by another program, please close the program and try again"
The files are not open on the desktop or elsewhere on the laptop either, but nothing i do seems to unlock these files so they can be managed remotely from the laptop across the wireless network.

I found one forum post that said something about having to unlock the permissions for the file in windows 7? Is this the problem? And if so, how would one go about doing that? I have checked the permissions of the folders themselves, and they are set to full read write access for everyone, so i don't know what i could possibly change. This is a very annoying glitch, having to go to my desktop every time i need to move or delete a file from my shared hard drive!

Also i have had no problems in the past w/ my previous two laptops managing files across my network on this particular desktop drive. Those were running win xp home and media center edition.

Can't Open Downloads Folder, File Does Not Have A Program Associated With It

"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel". As far as i can tell, all my other folders open up fine. Last thing i did was trying to download some software that would gradually turn my volume down so that i could fall asleep to it. It didn't work (older software, seemed like it wasn't compatible with windows 7) so i deleted the application and the installer which were located in my downloads folder.

In folder options > view > hidden files and folders: the option to show hidden files, folders, or drives is missing! How do i fix this?

Error - Program Doesn't Have Permissions To Modify Destination Folder

I installed windows 7 32 bit (accidentally). I am now trying to install 64 bit (from download) and after unpacking i get the error that the program doesn't have permissions to modify the destination folder or something like that. Any ideas? I also tried to burrow down into the unpacked folder and run the 'setup' but it told me i was trying to install the 64-bit version over the 32 bit version, but i thought i was doing a 'clean install' and not an upgrade.

Files Send To Dvd-rw Drive On Network Results In Deleted Files

"send to dvd-rw drive" when the source files are on a network drive results in deleted files! Windows 7 rc 7100. Have a mapped drive to another computer. I opened the folder, right clicked on a group of .doc files. I choose "send to dvd-rw drive". Responded to the prompt of "use like usb drive" or use in a cd/dvd player by choosing the 2nd choice. Then was faced with a prompt that filename.doc is no longer in this location cancel/retry/skip. All the files were gone! Not in recycle bin of either computer.

Program Files (x86)

Don't know if this happened when smp downloaded the new version or when windows downloaded a new version or when i downloaded j2se runtime environment 5. 0 update 3. Cause all this was done in the same 24hrs. But after all this happened, i am now not able to get into any of the c:program files (x86) it says i may not have permission or unspecified error. The only thing that works is the 64bit explorer and the weather gadget on the desk top. Have you heard of anything like this or would you know of a fix.

Duplicate Of Program Files

I have upgraded my windows 7 from 32 to 64 bit. I did a clean install and did a quick format of the drive first. This went ok, but i have duplicate of "program files". One is the usual program files and the second program files(x86). I want to get rid of this. I find that programs that are being installed that don't give an option of an installation location are by default being put into (x86), which i do not want.

I have tried to delete this file but the user accounts control will not allow me to do this, even though the control slider has been moved to the bottom and the computer rebooted. I am the only user and owner of the computer. The (x86) duplicates all the normal microsoft standard programs taking up unnecessary disk space, and now a large proportion of the self installed programs. I don't mind having to reinstall these if this problem can be solved.

Why Is Java Under Program Files?

I have moved on from discussing whether the java files under the windows folders are virus/trojan, because i have scanned them and they are the same size as those under the program files folders. My question now is why does java appear under both folders? Ihave java files under:1) program files2) program files (x86)3) windowssystem324) windowssyswow64 i've been told that java will install under both program files and program files (x86) because there are 32-bit and 64-bit versions. But that doesn't explain why there are files under the windows folders.

Live Mail Folder Relocation To Drive D

Drive c is for the os only, and is replaced with a new image daily. Ms outlook would let me direct the pst data file to the d drive, and so it was not affected when drive c replaced with new image. I wish to do this with live mail and live calendar. I see the folders i need to move are: windows live contacts, and windows live mail, located at: usersappdatalocalmicrosoft.

I did move these folders to the d drive using windows explorer, but when live mail is started, it just re-creates the folders back onto the c drive.
