Will Upgrade Installation Require More Space On Boot Drive ?

I have a very small 32gb boot drive with vista premium installed. Will upgrade installation require more space on the boot drive? The boot drive i have is an 32gb ssd. Since ssds are so expensive i ordered this small one as a boot drive only. So will i need space available on the c drive to upgrade my windows vista premium 64-bit to windows 7 64-bit? I have a secondary hard drive as my f drive. It is 320gb and contains all my programs and games, leaving about 200 gigs left.

If space is indeed required from my c drive, is there an alternative way to upgrade?

Getting Installation Of Win 7 To Boot From New Hard Drive After Upgrade

Upgrade To Win7 Wrt Hard Drive Space

I've been thinking about upgrading to windows 7 for a little while. I've been reading the system requirements (i meet all of them) but i noticed that i have to have 16gb of free space on my hard drive. My laptop is a basic (ish) spec so hdd space is at a premium. Will it always use this 16gb when everything is finished or is it just temporary.

What happens to vista? I've seen on some other forums that it keeps it installed. This is doesn't make sense - why would i want this and how could i stop it from doing this. Please bear in mind i would prefer to use an upgrade disc rather than a full copy to save money.

Error - Not Enough Free Space To Store Temporary Installation Files

Not enough free space error when i have 190 gig free on drive c? When upgrading from vista hp 64 bit to win 7 hp 64 bit, following the "checking compatibility" function of the upgrade process i get the following error message:

There is not enough free space to store temporary windows installation files. Try using disk cleanup, uninstall old programs, or move files to an external location such as a cd, dvd, or external hard drive.

I have done that, moved all pics, music, uninstalled itunes and done everything the program recommended. My c drive is 286 gig and it has 190 gig of free space. Clearly, there is plenty of room. So what's up with this error message?

Win 7 Upgrade Version - Installation On Reformatted Hard Drive

Win 7 (upgrade version) reinstallation following hard drive reformat. Need to reinstall xp now in order to activate win 7. I made the mistake of creating primary boot drives too small for an os other than xp or linux. Shortly after install i was unable to update my win 7 because of lack of space on the hard drive (all programs i could change the installation of, were on a separate drive). That meant i had to wipe the hard drive to repartition it.

I was under the impression that i could upgrade to win 7 after a clean install by putting the disk in and having windows check for it, like when i upgraded from me to xp. (Yes, i realize now the error of my ways. ) Now i need to fix it. Add to it, i have 32-bit xp and 64-bit win 7.

Having contacted microsoft tech support, i was told i could simply reinstall my xp and win 7 would recognize that it was there and set up dual boot. That isn't the case, as i suspected. In the reformat, i have lost some data that i thought i had backed up and obviously didn't, which is why i really don't want to reinstall win 7 a third time after reinstalling xp.

I have no windows. Old because of the reformat/repartitioning of my drive. Is there anything else i can do? (I'm so tired of being penalized with drm, activation etc. For purchasing licensed software because of all the pirates out there!).

Dual Boot - Can't See Win 7 Drive After Removing Other Boot Drive

My mobo (msi p7n diamond 780i sli / 570i sli) has a sata raid controller providing 6 sata interfaces
These are organized thus.

Sata 1 - [partition 1 - windows xp] [partition 2 - windows 7 beta (64bit)]
Sata 2 - ocz vertex - windows 7 home (64bit) retail version
Sata 3 - mirror a
Sata 4 - mirror b
Sata 5 - mirror a
Sata 6 - mirror b

The system was originally running xp on sata 1. I added a partition to sata 1 and installed windows 7 beta some weeks ago. The system dual booted to xp or win 7 beta fine. I then added the ocz vertex drive and installed the win 7 retail version, and i am able to dual boot to all three systems just fine.

However - i really want to do away with the xp and win 7 beta partitions and just run with the ocz drive. However if i disconnect the drive from sata 1 the system will not boot up. Can't find ntldr or bootmgr or something similar. I have changed the boot sequence in the bios to point at just the ocz drive - but it just won't boot from it.

Excessive Space Being Taken Up On C: Drive

(b) drive not showing up after windows 7 64 bit install. Drive (c) also has less than half its capacity available after a clean install. I just "custom" installed windows 7 ultimate 64 bit after running windows vista ultimate 32 bit. I followed all the defaults for the "custom" install and didnt do anything fancy, pretty much just clicked "next". Everything booted up fine but now when i go to my computer folder, only one of my internal hard drives is showing up (c). It is also showing my external hardrive - but not my second internal hard drive (b). Also, (c) has only 112 gb free of 298 gb after a clean install of windows 7. I know windows 7 cant be that big.
So:
(1) cant find second internal hardrive (b)
(2) excessive space being taken up on (c)
What gives?

Not Enough Space On Partitioned Drive

I have  a partitioned hard drive and "c" drive is only 29. 2 gb. What, if anything, can i delete in windows vista to get the required space i need to upgrade to windows 7? I have 7. 62 gb free and need another gig. I don't want to screw up vista in case of a problem with the installation and i don't want to do a clean install because i don't want to lose any programs.

Dual Boot - Move Boot Image To Second Drive

I have a problem with two different drives both running win7, one 32 the other drive64, on a dual boot system. I want to pull the win32 drive, but it also has my boot information for the win64 drive. When removed it will not boot. I have been working on this for 5-6 weeks. I want to remove the win7/32 and put the boot image of win7/64 on the second drive.

I booted from the win764 install dvd, and went to there pair your computer. The placethat displays the operating systems installed, none will show. I have tried bootsect from the command prompt. It seems to work, but tells me no partition on the second drive. Or on another attribute used, it can not find the path to the drive. I have tried rebuild bcd, fixmbr, etc.

Cannot Manage Backup Space On More Than 1 Drive At A Time

Cannot manage backup space on more than 1 drive at a time; can view backups on more than 1 drive at a time. I make image and regular backups to 2 different usb drives - because you do not know when a backup drive will fail. Win7 backup and restore gui allows one to view backups on multiple drives at same time via "select another backup to restore files from".

Manage space only allows to manage space on the currently configured backup drive. Further - if modifying the configuration to select a different drive - you are forced to start a backup before you can manage space on that drive. - "Save settings and run backup" there may be little space on the drive - so i will have to either cancel the backup after started or configure a useless  small backup so that i can then manage space on the drive.

Hard Drive Space Usage Under Win7

I just upgraded to win7 (64 bit). My c drive (intel ssd) has ~75 gb space. When i click on "computer, " it says that the total free space is 25gb (i.e 75gb is used up). But the space occupied by all files/folders adds up to only ~24 gb (~21 gb of this is occupied by "windows" and "windows. Old" folders, ~2. 4 gb by "program files" and "program files (x86)", and very little by other folders/files).

How can i find out what is taking up the rest of the space? I have emptied the recycle bin and have done disk cleanup. In addition, in the advanced settings list, i made sure that "show hidden files, folders and drives" is selected. I also unchecked "hide protected operating system files. ".

Low Disk Space On Recovery (d) Drive

I just switched my dell studio 15 from windows vista to windows 7. Once i got everything set up, i started receiving an error message that reads "low disk space on recovery drive". I have already gone and changed the program files to default to the c drive by going in through the registry (?) But am not sure what else i can do. I have tried uninstalling programs, but it tells me that i don't have enough disk space to do so. I only have the following folders in my recovery partition: dell, perflogs, program files, sources, tools, users, windows. Any suggestions of what i should do?

External Hard Drive Space Discrepancy

I have a 500gb western digital external hard drive which shows i actually have a total of 465gb (i understand this). Currently it says i have 277 gb free but the files i have saved on there amount to no more then 100gb, so shouldn't it have 365gb available. Also about once a month it says there is not enough room to complete a back up even though on my c drive it shows i only have about 135gb of stuff, so i have to delete my previous back ups and start again, why is this  .

New Sata Boot Drive Wont Boot

I have a new 2t sata drive (seagate). It took about 5 days of research to finally get my computer to see it. I used seagate's disk wizard to clone my older drive (ide). The sata drive was supposed to become the c: drive. Disk management does label it as the c drive but in "computer" it sees it as f:i disconnected my older drive and when i booted up the bios kept looking for the ide drive. Although the motherboard has sata built in, there seems to be no way to tell the bios that i want the sata drive to be the primary boot drive.

Also with the original drive disconnected i get a "ntldr not found. Press control-alt-delete to restart. "I believe mybios is the problem. I have flashed it with the newest bios i could find, (dates from 2005) but no sata adjustments in the bios. How can i make the bios know that i want the sata drive to be the primary boot drive?

Or is there a way to trick the bios into thinking that it is an ide drive? As it is, the computer is recognizing the sata drive as a scsi drive. I read somewhere that this is not a problem. In summary, i want my system to boot from the sata drive. I would like to reformat the original drive.

External Usb Drive Showing As Unallocated Space

I installed windows 7 rc on a brand new pc to try it. I got it running then plugged in my wd mybook 750gb external usb drive to copy some files onto the pc. That worked fine. I then shut down the pc. When i tried to connect the drive to my xp laptop it no longer shows up as a hdd. If i look in devices it's there but showing as unallocated space in the hdd management console.

I have over 300gb of backups on that drive and will be pretty *** off if windows 7 has trashed 2 years worth of data. I'm assuming the file allocation table or something has been corrupted?

Full D Recovery Drive Disk Space Warning

I'm having a somewhat similar problem as a previous poster but. Have a newer computer and i upgraded from vista home premium to w7 home premium . My backup d drive is full . I guess the backup has not removed former backups . Now processing is slower and i worried about a total freeze. I used the disk manager and tried to add space onto my d from c but only ended up with an unallocated partition of 20g's .couldn't figure out how to add to d.

In the previous solution " press a special key combination when the computer starts, you can use the recovery partition to restore the computer to the way it was when it was new. " Would that remove windows 7(don't want to do that" or. Do i have to remove the partitions letters for the d? Would that just make it one big c drive? . Would that effect computers performance? How can i get that unallocated partition back to c . Or to d? Sorry for being so wordy but i could sure use some help.

I am thinking some incompatibility between segplay games and vista home premium. Anyone have a suggestion?

Win 7 Reports Wrong Free Space On Hard Drive

I have 4 partitions set up on my hard drive. 1st partition has my windows 7 installation and some other microsoft products such as the office suit and visual studio and such.

2nd partition is empty and i'm not using it right now
3rd partition i have encrypted with the bitlock and use it for important files
4th partition i use for everything else. This partition is 219 gb in size. I have movie files, music, pictures, software iso's and the program files folder with lots of software.

Total all that data is exactly 48. T gb. I got this number in two different ways both equaling 48. 7 gb: first i manually calculated the sizes of all the folders and then to verify i used a utility called jdiskreport which confirmed my calculation.

The problem is that windows tells me that my 4th partition is completely full and only 1. 3 gb is left when clearly that doesn't make sense. I am missing 160gb which is a large number. I looked at all possibilities: hidden files, system restore files but there's nothing there. I would like to know if anyone out there has any idea as to what's going on and how i can fix it. Absolutely any ideas are welcome.

Upgrade Installation Monitor Goes Out Of Range

Monitor goes "out of range" before windows 7 upgrade installation completes. Installation fails, or just stalls at that point. Help this is frustrating. There is no reason why you would think my computer would have a problem with this upgrade install. I had it custom built just this summer. Here are my components so you know what i have.

Intel core i7 920 64bit processor
Intel dx58s0 motherboard
3gb ddr3 ram
Xfx ati radeon hd 4870 1 gb ddr5
Running 64 bit vista business

I am a student so i figured i would download the windows 7 pro (x64) file from the msdn software site and take a stab at the upgrade. This allows you to download a valid iso image of the full version. I would then launch the .exe from a virtual drive. Starts just fine.

The compatibility part of the install wizard asked me to unistall itunes, the ati catalyst control center, the ati catalyst install manager, and microsoft live onecare. I completed these tasks and relaunched the install.

At first i was experiencing the install lag after the first reboot during the expanding windows files section, but it eventually completed. After the next reboot, the install wizard would get to the final transferring files section, appear to finish, and then my monitor is sent "out of range". Nothing happens after this point, i have waited at least 20 minutes during one attempt. It could be wanting me to continue and i just can't see it. I am not able to do anything else and i am forced to do a hard shut down, where on the reboot, the installation of windows 7 fails and rolls back to vista, which works just fine (a lone bright spot in this).

I have researched this endlessly for hours with no acceptable solution. I'm sure i can't be the only one to have had this issue. I have tried disabling my video card before the istall, made sure i had the latest drivers before the install. I've even tried to make sure my monitor is compliant. The w7 upgrade advisor also checked out perfectly fine.

This is not a problem that can be solved by rebooting in safe mode since the install never finishes, so please don't post that solution. I am also not having the 62% stall issue, or the constant reboot issue after it rolls back. This seems like a driver thing, or maybe an hdmi thing.

Any help would be appreciated. Also i would rather stay with vista than waste another day either attempting this upgrade without a solution explanation, or doing a complete install and reloading all of my files and apps. Maybe this fix hasn't come along yet, or i missed something. It just seems that my setup should have made for an easy upgrade, unlike those trying to install w7 on outdated hardware.

Cannot Complete Upgrade - Installation Just Stops

Cannot complete upgrade from win vista home premium 64 to win 7 home premium 64 using student offer, installation just stops at transferring files, settings and programs with no hd activity. I have tried upgrading my pc from vista home premium 64 to windows 7 home premium 64 four separate times, using microsoft's academic upgrade offer.

I use the upgrade option in installation, have tried both "online get latest installations updates" and "do not get latest install updates" and my upgrade goes fine all the way to the end when it should be moving my files, settings, and programs over to win 7  from vista, this is after win 7 has been installed at this point everything just stops, no hd activity, computer is not locked up though, caps lock still works, can move mouse, can even hit the x button in the installation window and get the message "installation cannot be canceled now. Etc. ", But the computer is not doing anything because no hd activity, i even left it on for 8 hours and no movement what so ever once it gets to this point.

I ran microsoft windows upgrade advisor the downloadable one and the one win 7 installation runs, and according to it everything should upgrade fine. I know this is extremely frustrating, i updated my drivers and everything yet it still get stuck at the end. I think doing a custom install would work, but i did not want to have to re-install everything, if i would have wanted to do a clean install, i would have purchased win 7 professional for the same price as home premium, since it is the version i preferred, but just to lazy to re-install everything on my pc.

The pc i am trying to install it on is a new system, just built in march of this year, core i7 920 system, and i even took it back down to stock clock in the bios, just in case that was causing problems. Anyone have any ideas, besides doing a custom install?

Custom Installation Vs Upgrade Install

I'm planning on upgrading my vista 64 bit to windows 7 using my upgrade discs i got from hp. I'd like to make a clean installation rather than an upgrade install but there is a warning in the manual that if i choose to custom install, i may need to reinstall drivers that are not included in my discs. What does this mean? Does this mean that if i custom install windows 7, i may need to download programs in order to run my mouse, keyboard etc? (Sorry i'm an no computer techie).

Also just in general, is there a big performance difference between custom install and upgrade install?

Remove Boot Drive When Win7 Is On Different Drive

I want to change out a drive, "f", but some how the windows boot manager is listed here on the drive i want to change. I tried swapping this drive, "f" but i cannot boot into win7 on "h". If i just remove the earlier version of windows xp using bcdedit(easybcd) would this work, i'd hate to do this and not be able to boot to anything. The output from bcdedit and easybcd is listed at the end of this posting.

As an added note you'll see that my win7 boot drive is listed as "h", i've no idea how this happened so how would i go about changing this back to "c" and whats the implications, i know i may have to reinstall some apps but anything else?

Installation On A Non C: Drive, Still Shows On C: Drive

I have tried various methods and can change the drive letter designation of my various drives under w7p(64) but seemingly one cannot (easily) change the drive letter that the os operates under. (Why w7 feels it has to be on the c: drive eludes me!) My hdd was previously set up under xp with a c: for utility stuff, d: as the wxpp-os and i was trying to install w7p onto the e: partition. (A 1. 5 tb drive, so each partition has plenty of space. )

After rebooting, w7p displays that it had the c: drive, wxpp had the d: drive, and my utility partition had no drive letter designation at all. Rebooting to xpp showed the proper drive designations. As i mentioned first, i can use the "disk management" feature to change all the drive letters around other than for the w7 os drive. Xp has no problems with my setup, and i have even managed to get vista to accept residing on a non c: drive previously.

Any hints as to if or how i can get w7p to accept being called out on the e: drive? (Which is where it is/was installed after all, i just want it to wear its proper name tag. ) It's very confusing to dual boot the system and not have the drive letters be consistent. If w7 is using some sort of remapping to allow more varied handling of the drive resources, why can't it allow me to continue handling them the way i've been handling them for the past 20 years?
