Secondary Hard Drive Not Appearing As Option To "setup Backup"

Secondary hard drive not appearing as an option to "set up backup". I recently got a computer with windows 7 home. I have 500 gb western digital wd800jd-75hka1 ata hard drive that i installed in my new computer out of my previous one. I did all the necessary things to install it as a fully functioning secondary hdd. From the my computer window, it shows up, i can access it's files, it works perfect, even listing it as a hard drive.

However, when i go to set up a backup, which is the primary reason i wanted it in this computer, it doesn't show up as an option to backup. The only available back up destinations listed are the self created "recovery e:"and my dvd-rw drive. I want my wd d:!

Backup And Restore Vs External Hard Drive

I have upgraded from vista ultimate to 7. I also needed to change out my 150gb hdd for a 500gb hdd. I thought the cool thing to do would be to install 7 and all my softwareon the old drive, make a backup/image of that drive onto a spare external drive, install the new drive and restore the image to the new drive.

My plan worked to perfection with one fatal flaw. The image only created 150gb of usable space on my 500gb hdd. So i reinstalled the original 150gb hdd and put the 500gb hdd into an external drive box with usb connection. The computer immediately recognized the 500gb hdd but when i look for it on computer, it won't show up.

Neither will my other external hdd's. I have tried on different usb ports and usb cables and the device manager says that all usb devices are operational. Dell precision m4300, 4gb memory, 2. 50 gh, t9300 core 2 duo 32 bit system. Extra credit: can anyone tell me why the "safely remove hardware and eject media" icon won't work? Double clicking and right mouse click have no affect.

Backup On External Hard Drive Not Recognized

System: windows 7 professional
Machine: elitebook 8530w i have recently backed up my entire laptop on an external hard drive, after that i re-installed windows 7. Now i want to access a certain file from the back up, but that is not possible. If i go over control panel and click on "select another backup to restor from ", then it is not listed and i can only choose networks (why?)If i go over the windows explorer, maneuver to the file on the external hard drive and right click on the backup file, i have the option: "restore options ". That does not do anything. I can click on that as much as i want. Please help and/or fix.

Empty Backup Folder On External Hard Drive

This is regarding windows 7 home premium. I recently discovered the files created on my external hard drive by windows automated backup utility are empty. The backup utility continues to apparently create backups: the external drive lights up to indicate activity when the "backup in progress" symbol appears in the notification area of the taskbar.control panel>system and security>backup and restore shows a backup size of 92. 24 gb and verifies the backup location as the external drive.

The external drive itself appears to be working fine: i can move other files, such as outlook backups, to the drive and verify their file size. There are two backup-related file folders on the external drive, one with the name of the computer and the other named windowsimagebackup, which was created about two minutes after the first. But both are empty.

Restore Windows Using Backup After Completely Reformat Hard Drive

If i back up the system, then completely wipe and reformat the hard drive, will i be able to somehow restore windows using the backup, with all the software intact (aka subscriptions etc. ). Also how do i restore if the memory is 100% wiped clean? Basically i have an acer laptop with a stupid unaccessible hard-drive partition with the vista acer backup on it.

I am currently running the w7 rc and am about to upgrade to w7, there is also a vista dual-boot i will erase at the same time. I have mcafee and powerdvd subscriptions on the rc. Now when i upgrade the rc to w7 directly these subscriptions will carry over, and that's wonderful, however i still have the stupid partition problem wasting hdd space. As i understand the only way to get rid of it is a full hdd reformat, which wipes the memory. My plan is to backup the new w7 account to an external hdd, thats a ful backup of everything, perform the reformat, and somehow get the backup back onto the hdd. Only there's no windows software to run the recovery.

So, my question's are:
How do i get the backup onto the computer after the wipe, considering there is no software to read it (would i need to get microsoft to re-activate the product key)?
If i can somehow get all this done will the subscriptions still work?
Quite simply - is there an easier way of sorting all this out?

Secondary Drive Or Any Usb Drive Is Not Accessible

After installing windows seven on my primary drive (followed the installation procedures for 7 on 32 bit xp pro) all works fine except my secondary drive or any usb drive is not accessible.get error message they are not available. They are in the setup bios and in devices, but in my computer if i left click i get the error message.

However my secondary disk is a sata 500 gig drive. Windows 7 will recognize dvd/cd drive but only the "c' drive (of hard drives)> i have tried usb drives in addition to the sata but it does not read them, only tells me they are not accessible. The one exception was the windows easy transfer data sent to a usb disk made prior to loading windows 7.

Win 7 Does Not See Secondary Drive

I am trying to install win 7 rc onto a used 500gb hd but when it comes to where to install it it cannot see the 500 gb hd. I also tried to install win vista but i came up with the same thing it too does not see the 500 gb hd. I tried to just boot up the 7 rc to just the 500 gb hd but it is not being seen. The 500 gb hd is being seen in win vista my computer, my bios, disk management, but not with the install disks, just my primary hd. I am running an msi mobo dka790gx home built cpu, amd phenom quadcore athena 9650.

My bios are set for the raid config to ide. I cannot think of any setting in the bios that i could change, might it just be the hd being a bad drive? However i can read and write to this drive, just not install an os to it.

Programs Assigned To Secondary Drive Rather Than C:

I need to make the default drive for new program installation different from the "c" drive; unfortunately, not all setup wizards give you a choice, . Some just automatically stick everything into the c drive. My c drive is a small solid-state drive intended for running windows and not much else. Therefore i need to install all new software to my secondary 2tb drive.

Making Secondary Drive Primary In Win7

I purchased a cheap e-machines, because it was a 32-bit system. Unfortunately, the hd it came with was a tiny 320gb. I have a secondary drive that is 1. 5gb and apparently much faster than the cheap one used by the factory. I'd like to know several things, from someone who knows/tried (successfully) exactly how this works, particularly with 7. What i don't know, is how 7 acts, in comparison to previous versions. I have a couple legit copies of vista, and xp.

If during this procedure, something goes awry, and say i lose the original version of vista that's etched somewhere on my system, can i still install the win 7 upgrade kit disc, using a previous version of vista (even if it's oem)? And what's the easiest and most likely to result in successful transfer?

Backup Failed, Backup Drive No Longer Detected

Windows 7 kept bugging me about creating a backup, so i finally decided to. I chose to backup the default items onto my d: drive. I let it run, left for a bit and came back. It failed at 70ish%. Tried again. Same thing. I didn't have a whole lot of time left so i decided to just forget it.

I deleted the incomplete backup files on my d: drive (there was a c: backup file and mediaid. Bin) since there seemed to be no use for incomplete backup files.

When i got home and turned on my computer, post took longer than usual. My sata 2 drive was undetected. Sata 2 = my d drive. When windows starts to boot, it freezes when the windows animation is doing it's thing. I tried repairing and restoring from previously known good configuration and still nothing. I used my win7 disk to check for problems, and i even used that to restore to a point prior to my failed backups.

What else could i try? Why would my d: drive suddenly be undetected in bios, and why would a failed backup cause my windows installation to freeze? Edit: i unplugged the data cable from my d: drive and now windows boots. So deleting backup files royally screwed up my d: drive?

Upgrading Existing Hard Drive To Ssd Hard Drive

I have recently purchased a laptop with one hard drive slot. I want to change the existing hard drive slot to a ssd. My laptop came with windows 7 pro pre-installed (no disk supplied). When i purchased the machine i created the windows recovery disk.

I would like to know if the upgrade is as simple as:

1) removing the current 500g hard drive
2) installing the new new ssd
3) running the recovery disks to re-install my copy of windows 7 pro or am i missing something?

Upgrade On New Hard Drive Because Of Failed Hard Drive

Anyway to upgrade on a new hard drive because of a failed hard drive with vista on it? I had a pc that came with a pre installed version of vista home 32 bit, however my hard drive has just totally failed, is there anyway that i'll be able to just get the upgrade version and install it on my new hard drive, or as i beleive to be the case, will i have to get the full version of windows 7. My pc didn't come with any sort of vista install disc.

As i said im fairly certain i know the answer and its that i get a new hard drive and will have to get the full version of 7 but just wanted to check with people who know far more on the subject than i do.

Xp On Separate Drive To Win 7, Setup Dual Boot

This is my first time on the forum and even though i know a little about computers i could certainly use some advice & assistance here. Presently i have xp pro installed on a 500gb drive(which is partitioned) and i have a 750gb drive that i will be installing windows 7 pro(which again is partitioned)onto. My question is thus: how can i make a dual boot with xp & w7.

These are my specs: drive "c" has xp installed with a partition("d"). Then i have a separate disk with drive "e" which is empty with a partition("f")also empty. Then i have "g" & "h" as my 2 dvd/cd burners. Lastly i have an an external wd my book essential which is drive "j" and the smartware is showing as drive "i". Soin 'my computer' there are drives c, d, e, f, g, h, i &j. I am running a gigabyte ep45t-extreme m/b with 4gb of 1333mhz ddr3 corsairram, performance is by the intel core2duoe8500
Chip(3. 16ghz).

I do not want to have both xp & w7 on the same disk, rather on 2 separate drives. Since i have xp pro already installed as "c" drive how can i make "e"the other os for dual boot. Remember that "e" is on a separate drive. I did have it set up as a dual boot before but my little tacker played his game and things went haywire, so therefor me & all my wisdom decided that i could get it back to normal and yep, you guessed it, i absolutely stuffed it up even more.

Can somebody be so kind and inform me as to how i can make my system a dual-boot once again ?. If you can then i will be eternally grateful. I look forward to hearing from you.

I added a new drive and set up a raid array. This deleted all the information on my old drive. I already performed a clean install of windows 7 home premium on the new array. Now i cannot use my product key because i have the upgrade disc. Is there a way for me to input the keys to my older versions of windows so i can use the upgrade key? If i call microsoft, will they activate my windows if i provide them my vista key? I am trying to prevent installing the entire os again.

After pressing it i'm getting an "this file does not have a program associated with for performing this action" error. All efforts to remove this eye-nagging issue, using both regedit and various 3rd party context-menu editors, have failed. Any ideas why this might have happened?

Setup Hangs - Required Cd/dvd Drive Device Driver Is Missing

Windows 7(ultimate) setup hangs: "a required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now. " First my hardware i'm trying to get installed:

Gigabyte ga-ma790fxt-ud5p
4 wd5000aaks sata 500gb drives configured as raid5 connected to the sb750

When i start the setup, everything is fine until i hit "install now". Afterwards i'm delighted with 5-10 min. Of "setup is starting", which is followed by "a required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, cd, dvd, or usb flash drive, please insert it now. "

After that i provide the "ahcix64s.sys" which is the proper sb750 raid driver.

I tried the versions from: http://america. Giga-byte.com/filelist/driver/motherboard_driver_raid_amd_sb7xx_bootdisk_win7-64bit.exe

And the one from amd: https://a248. E. Akamai.net/f/674/9206/0/www2. Ati.com/drivers/whql_sb7xx_raid_vista_3. 1. 1540. 127.zip

Both with the same result: "no device could be found. Make sure the driver files are correct and located on the driver installation media"

Just a side note: i'm installing from a usb flash drive, which has worked already, when i connect a single sata drive in ide mode to the gigabyte sata chip (jmb322); however this is not my desired config, i need to run the system from the raid.

Secondary Display Just Flashes

Whenever i try to enable a secondary display on my laptop it detects the monitor but then all it does is flash the desktop and then the screen goes black, like it's stuck in this auto-detect loop or something. I have tried multiple monitors and get the same thing. What's even funnier is that it worked the very first time i tried and since then has not worked once. I have updated to the latest drivers available on nvidia's website and windows 7 is up to date as well. I have tried using the external monitor as the primary screen, tried duplicating the desktop and just extending. I'm doing all this using the win+p key method.

My setup is a dell vostro 1720 laptop with an nvidia 9600m gs graphics chip and am running windows 7 x64.

Secondary Display Not Detected

I have two monitors on an nvidia 8600gts running windows 7. 1 is a generic dell 19" lcd that came with my room mate's computer, and the other is a 22" lg flatron. For a long time i had both running fine, primarily using the lg, and putting up documents on the dell. I disabled the dell to get a game to run, since it would not run with both monitors enabled, which was my first issue. Then, about 2 weeks later i shuffled my machine over a bit. One of the monitor plugs came loose, and now windows will not detect my lg screen.

This had happened before, and then came back about a week later, however both screens were enabled at that time. Now i cannot get the lg to be even found on my computer. I've tried the windows display settings, the nvidia control panel, even the hardware manager. I cannot detect the monitor anywhere. So, how can i get it back? I've got up-to-date drivers for the card, i've tried rebooting, unplugging and replugging, changing inputs, scanning for hardware changes, and everything else i could possibly think of. Please someone help me get both my monitors running.
