Setting Up Security To Protect Router

I set up a network and installed a router for wireless access to the net. I did not set up the security protection on the router at that time. Am trying to do so now but keep running into road block. I followed the directions  for security set up in the "setting up a wireless network. When i click on the "set up a new network" and click next i get a window that has two (2) messages.

"Choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure" and "it might take up to 90 seconds for unconfirmed devices on your computer to appear". Under the second message is a blank box. Nothing ever appears and the only options i am left with is cancel or next selection is not activated. Can someone help on where to go from here. The router manufacturer has provided ip address and password which i don't know what to do with.

Setting Wireless Router Security Setting Have Changed

I have two selections possible. 'set up a new connection or network' wizard, or 'connect to a network' (manually) in windows 7. I know how to install hardware but my problem is, the security setting have been changed, and these changes i am trying to make in the configuration are not possible. The different permutations on offer do not provide the correct selection for me. e.g. I want to key in wpa + wpa2 i can only have one of them. Authentication and data encryption have same problem. You cannot key in the info manually.

Network Issue - Security Type Is Not Same As Router

I am running windows 7, just did an update and one of them was for the wireless (n) card. I can no longer connect to the internet. It prompts me that my security type is not the same as the router. I have the router set on wpa-psk. My computer no longer has that as a choice, it has wpa personal, wpa2 personal, wpa enterprise, and wpa2 enterprise. Any ideas?

Protect Files From Being Deleted

How do i protect files and/or folders from being deleted?  Our photos and videos are our most valuable possession and they need better protection - from us. We back up to external drives. But, we would also like to "lock" the files to ensure that when we are sorting, browsing, and copying they are not effectively deleted. How do we eliminate deleting and/or moving of files? If possible we would like to eliminate the possibility to delete while still allowing viewing, copying to project folders, tagging and rating. Is this possible?

Windows Security Versus Norton Security

I have just taken for granted that i need a separate security company, because every time i purchase a computer, "norton" came with the included software. My question is; is windows defender and ms security sufficient security for a home computer?

Wireless Router, One Pc Will Not Network

I have new 4 hp desktops set up on a wireless network thru a westfall wireless router that have been in use for several months without using any of the windows 7 network - home/work group capabilities. I was asked to connect a hp wireless printer through the same router so all four pcs could print to the one printer. The printer set up was easy. However, all but one pc is able to network. I can map the other pcs and printer.

I can access the printer webpage and change printer preferences but i can not use the printer. When i am in the network settings, the full network map setting shows the other pcs and printer but when asked to show devices connected to the network it shows zero items. I have checked all firewall, internet and file sharing settings on all four pcs and they are the same. This is my first experience using windows 7. Is there another feature that would block sharing or networking access?

Ip Address Changes On Router Reboot

Running windows 7 cabled to wireless router. Occasionally broadband "drops out" and when rebooting router ip address for wireless printer (epson stylus office tx610fw) changes form 10. 1. 1. 2   to 10. 1. 1. Something depending on how many laptops are connected. As a result i have to go into control panel, hardware & sound select the printer then via 'settings' select the printer and add it manually with new ip address. Obviously irritating as other family members, despite printed instructions, cannot manage it. Please, is there anyway to 'lock' the ip address so it doesn't change?

Netgear Wireless Router Problem

I recently upgraded my hp desktop computer from windows xp to windows 7. For the past 4 years my access of my desktop and my wife'slaptop computer is as follows: the internet cable is hooked to a "netgear wireless-n wnr1000 v2" which is hooked to a arris model tm02g modem, which is then hooked to my hp desktop computer. With windows xp both my my desktop and my wife's laptop could receive the internet. Now my wife's can receive the internet with this arrangement but my desktop cannot. When i connect the internet cable directly to the arris modem-thus eliminating the natgear wireless router-i can receive the internet on my desktop but my wife cannot on her laptop. Sometimes i receive a message that there is an additional computer with the same address as mine on the network.

Network Wireless Router Problem

I am using a desktop and a laptop with windows 7 and i have a wireless router which had been running without problem. I tried to set up homegroups, so i could share the printer. It wouldn't allow that, saying that there was a problem with the network, but no hints on what the problem is. At some point windows 7 took over my router setup and made a network. I can't seem to control the network or make changes to it, and now the laptop won't connect to the network, because i don't know a password that was assigned at some point. How do i kill, revise, or control the network? The available menu's don't seem to address this.

Unable To Connect To Wireless Router

I just purchased an hp mini with w 7 starter two months ago. Until yesterday i have been able to connect to my actiontec m1424wr router. After running win network diagnostics it says there is a "problem with the driver for the wireless network adapter". I can't get online to help and support for further diagnostics because i can't connect to the internet(catch 22). The taskbar shows my router is available with "limited access". I also have a dell laptop w/ xp and have never had a problem connecting. I have performed some of the ideas from one of the threads on this forum including the shutdown of the netbook and router and then powering them back up. I am not real tech savvy but really need some help with this.

Internet Connection Sharing Using 3g Usb Router

I have three machines, two running win 7 and one xp machine. My internet connection is via a 3g usb connection on my main machine running win 7. I recently purchased a d-linkdap-1160 wireless router so that i can share the internet connection. It seems win 7 cannot or will not share the 3g connection when using the outer. If i set up an ad-hoc wireless network and exclude the router then ics works with no problem.

As soon as i try to set ics and use the router then everything falls over and i lose the internet and the wireless network. If the 3g connection is installed on the xp machine and shared using ics then i have no problems. Do the same thing on win 7 and it will not work. My local techie suggests setting up a proxy server on win 7 main machine and letting that handle the internet sharing. Any other ideas?

Disk Attached To Router Runs Slow

The issue i am having is with a router where an external disk is attached so that it is functioning as a nas. On my xp machine i experienced that the nas drive ran very slow and i found out that i had to install the net bios protocol which made it run smoothly. Now i've started to run windows 7 and the connection from windows 7 to the nas is again very slow (xp -> nas = still running fine).
I've tried to find the netbios protocol in windows 7 but no luck, so i have instead enabled the netbios over tcp/ip. Any ideas on how to make my "nas" run fast with windows 7?

Okay, i just recently upgraded from windows vista to windows 7 ultimate, everything seems to work fine except for the fact that my laptop isn't detecting my wireless router bthomehub-0025. All the other wireless access points show on the box connect to a network. Then i went to set up a manual connection and i typed in the ssid box.

Setting Up Raid 1

A question for setting up raid 1 ( i have never attempted raid before). I understand that raid 1 can be set up through windows 7. I have one 1tb drive with windows 7 pro, 64-bit and one blank 1tb drive, which i would like to use to mirror the other drive. I know that when using hardware raid that you must set it up before loading the os. I already have many programs, etc. On my main drive and was hoping it wasn't too late to use the blank drive as a mirror. If so, are there some simple instructions to follow?

Setting Up File Sharing

Two desktops both running windows 7 home premium. Got it set up once and it worked great. Then due to problems on pc 2 i did a clean install of windows 7 home premium. The files that i am trying to share reside on pc1. I have the homegroup set up on it and set several files to share and then selected read/write for those files. Printed out the key and went to pc2 to set it up.

Did as instructed on control panel but there is no network and internet but went into network. Thats when it gets crazy as it seems that in trying to join now and put in the password from pc1 it prints out its own password on the screen and says that there are no members in the homegroup.could someone help or point me to a document to read and use?

Losing Setting On Reboot

I have been getting windows 7 all installed and set up over the last few days. Did a clean install on a box that had xp. At some point today, windows 7 started losing a lot of my personal setting on every reboot. I have no idea if i flipped a setting that would do this or if something is scrooged. Examples of what is lost are my settings in ie and firefox (i use both browser as required by my job). The customization of the tool bars and which ones are displayed are all reset to defaults for both browsers on reboot. Also i lose all of my saved id/password for various web sites. I am not sure what all else is being lost, but do any of you have an idea of what might cause this?

Folder Setting Not Saving

I noticed that folder settings are not being saved after i restart the pc. There are two scenarios.
1. After i installed winamp media player, all audio files default to that program. I will open an mp3 file with windows media player and tell it to always open with this program. It then opens all mp3 files with wmp instead of winamp, but as soon as i restart it goes back.

2. I have an mp3 player which i connect to the pc and device stage opens it up and says that there is a new update for the player. I hit update and the interface changes. This stays like that until i restart the pc. Once i restart it, the interface goes back to the old one and it tells me there is a new update.

Windows 7 x64 with latest updates and patches installed.

Setting Up Hardware Raid Under Win7

Setting up a hardware raid under windows 7, with a separate system disc for system and programs (non raid) and 3 disc hardware raid 5 for data storage. I was running a windows xp pro machine with a hardware raid set to run as raid 5 (a 3 disc raid ) and a separate disc for the system and programs files. I want to recreate this set up using windows 7 pro (64 bit) running on a msi 790gx-g65 mother board. I successfully installed windows 7 on the system disc, without the raid drives being  installed. So i now have windows installed and running ok on my sytem disc.

I than added the 3 raid drives, set the bios to raid and set up the 3 disc hardware raid in the raid setup dialogue. Rebooted the system and first message error massage was 'can't find operating system' rebooted from dvd and started to reinstall window 7. Fter the keyboard screen, windows searches for an operating system but dose not find one. I select repair system add drives (latest raid drivers downloaded from the motherboards website).

Window finds these and seems to installs the drivers. First time i did this it windows did not find any of the drives at all, i repeated the process and it then found the raid and the separate drive but then it would not install on to the separate drive giving an error message saying it was not a correct drive and windows would not could not install on to it. Any idea anyone?

Cannot Access Documents And Setting Folder

I recently installed windows 7 rc as a dual boot with xp. Unfortunately, in windows 7, not only can i not access my documents and setting folder (win7 partition), but nothing through the 'user' folder, either. I created a new account, and had the same trouble. I've tried changing permissions through the tabs and dialogs, including in safe mode, and just as it seems it's getting ready to write the new permissions, it pops up yet another 'access denied' dialog. I've gone through windows update and all is up to date.

Should i be concerned, or is this a 'windows 7 rc' quirk?  How will it affect applications i might want to install to "try out"?

Setting Individual Window Sizes

I cannot figure out how to set individual windows sizesin w7 and have them stay set. I have a desktop folder called "internet" where i keep about a dozen internet related shortcuts. It is set to display as medium icons and is sized to exactly hold those icons in two rows of six. When i open my computer (not sure why we keeping changing the name of this feature but that is another discussion) i have the view set to list and i want the window much larger than the desktop folder described above.

However what happens is that whatever the size is of the last window i close, any windows opened subsequently are sized that size. I want windows to retail their size as well as their view. Since functionality is obviously built in to retain view on a per window basis there has to be he possibility of retaining size as well.

Os Boot Menu Time Setting

I don't know what this black screen is called , but its the one, where  u can choose which operating system u want to use. For example if u installed windows 7 and windows vista and u open ur computer  it gives u a choice  to choose which windows u wanna use. Basically i installed windows 7 twice and  now i have to choose between windows 7 and windows 7 the first one is the working one, the second one not. But it takes 28 seconds to be chosen automatically. I was wondering if i can either decrease these 28 seconds to 1 second for example or just remove the second windows 7 to make it run with the first one automatically.

Setting Lan / Wlan Priorities

I'm running w7-64 up-graded from vista on an hp hdx16-1200 connected through an hp dock to a netgear wireless router (cable connected from router to dock). If i have a lan connected and wifi enabled, the pc selects the slower wifi connection. Backwards to what i'd expect/want. When i turn wifi off, it selects the lan. Until i installed w7, the appropriate priority was set. Lan/wlan switching is not available in my bios. Hp is telling me that there was a setting in vista that ms eliminated in w7 and they have no recommendation for me other than turning wifi on and off.

Where Is Advanced Network Connection Setting?

Where is this in win 7? Advanced network connection setting. Win xp -> network connections (menu) advanced. In win xp to set the order of which adapter has priority, there was the "advanced" setting within the menu bar on network connections. Where is this in win7?
