Cannot Download Apps - Files Appears To Complete But Are Not Present

I have recently moved to a 64-bit win7 machine - with all of the fun of shifting my software that entails. Somewhere during the process ie8 stopped allowing me to download files - i get the screen for saving the file, there appears to be a download but there is nothing there. I have tried resetting to defaults twice. I have tried creating shortcuts from the 32 and 64 bits versions of ie8 on the machine. I've done the right click 'run as administrator' i'm running bitdefender 2010 (win7 compatible) and no other antivirus/firewall. Any suggestions welcomed

Install 32-bit Apps To Program-files Rather Than Program Files (x86)

On 64-bit win7, is it wrong to install 32-bit apps to (drive letter):program files rather than program files (x86)? If wrong should installer prevent this? If installer allows it, what app behavior is appropriate?

Background: winzip 14. 0 (a win7 compatible 32-bit app) won't run if installed to c:program files. If installed to any other alternate path or folder name it runs ok. By convention starting with vista, c:program files (x86) is for 32 bit apps and c:program files for 64-bit apps. But installers allow overriding the install path and folder name. e.g, maybe i want 32 bit apps in c:program files and 64 bit apps in c:program files (x64).

If c:program files is a restricted location for 32 bit apps, should not the installer and/or os enforce this, rather than allow installation then break the app? What is the correct practice for both users installing apps and developers porting apps to win7?

Unable To Download Any Files

So last night i left my computer on and when i woke up it seemed as if it had restarted since it was back at the login screen. After signing in i found that i was/am unable to download anything from the internet. I have tried both firefox and ie8. I have run an updated anti-virus and spyware scan. Anything i download is apparently nonexistent. The odd thing is that i am to surf the web just fine. Any help would be huge.

P. S. I trolled the forums and have tried resetting ie8 back to defaults, deleting temp files etc.

Program Files Download Permission

I have a new windows 7 laptop (64 bit), and struggling at times to learn how to use it. I'm in the habit on my windows xp desktop, of downloading setup/installer files into program files, where i set things up as follows:

Program files
-Adobe
-Games
-Tetris
-Tetris program
-Tetris installer
-Inkscape
-Inkscape program
-Inkscape installer
-Inkscape tutorial #1

Sorry, i can't figure out how to make a single-space. Hopefully you can see that i put my setup/installer file in its own folder, alongside the program folder, both within what i guess you could call an "umbrella folder". For example you can see that i might also put a tutorial or some other related item - i'm very organized. So when i download, i would put the setup/installer or zip file into 'inkscape installer' or 'tetris installer'.

Then when i install or unzip, i do so into 'inkscape program' or 'tetris program'. That's how i do it on my xp desktop computer, and have been for years. But here in windows 7, when i try to download into program files, i get an error message: "you don't have permission to save in this location.contact the administrator to obtain permission. " I am the adiminstrator, my user account is the only one on this computer, and it's the adminstrator account!

After spending hours (5 or 6) with dell tech support, finally i am told that in windows 7, manual download directly into program files is not allowed. Files can only be installed directly or moved in after downloading elsewhere. I was ready to accept that and create a new sort of workflow for myself, perhaps keeping my installer files all in one folder, outside of program files. But then, while searching these forums, i came across this thread: http://social. Answers.microsoft.com/forums/en-us/w7files/thread/d2bb7c3c-bf0b-4ea6-8463-42461a56c105

It offers instructions for changing permissions. And i think i can probably follow those instructions without further help. But just before i did, i thought i should ask whether that applies to my particular problem, that i detailed above, including error message. Have i been misinformed by dell (it wouldn't be the 1st time). By following those instructions, will i be able to download in my usual manner? Or at the very least, can i try it relatively safely, without major complications?

I suspect that even if it doesn't solve my problem, it may reduce all the other permission related message boxes that keep popping up - moving files around, etc. I hope so anyway.

Unable To Download Audio Mp3 Files

I got a new hp pavillion entertainment pc with windows 7 for christmas. It has crashed twice, wiping out the hard drive each time, requiring reinstallation of the recovery discs. Before the first crash, i could download mp3 files without a problem. Since then, i am unable to download any audio mp3 files, but can download text files. Also, email windows live program runs intermittently, but more often than not, it says it is not available and to try later since the crash.

I also lost my free trial of office suite in the first crash, it did not restore in the recovery. Now my hard drive shows "recovery drive" is nearly full. What do i do? I have tried saving the mp3 files to c drive as well as dvd drive. After about 50 tries, i was able to download one file, none since.

Subsystem Needed To Support Image Type Is Not Present

Virtually every program on my computer will no longer start. I am receiving the following error:
C:program files (x86) "followed by specifics about the program" the subsystem needed to support the image type is not present. This implies to microsoft office 2010, sonos desktop, logmein, norton 360, windows live, etc, etc.

I can't find any online report of this error previously. It appears this may have begun following a microsoft update.microsoft recovery can not restore to a previous point. I keep getting a response that it was unsuccessful possibly do to a antivirus program. Norton uninstall will not start because of originally listed problem.

Printer Appears In Unspecified Devices

I connected a zebra printer to my windows 7 machine using usb. The printer appeared in the unspecified devices. I went to there web site and obtained the latest drivers and installed them. The printer appeared in the printers section and works fine. However, the printer also still appears in the unspecified devices and there are no options to delete it. When the printer is switched off it disappears only to reappear when switched on again. I have seen another issue with several posts of the same type but no resolution was posted.

Running 64-bit Apps

I just upgraded to win7, and i installed the 64-bit version. This is my first time using a 64-bit os. My question is this: i've installed a few programs that are made for a 64-bit os (like cubase), but windows installed them into the 'programs files (x86)' directory instead of the 'program files' directory. I'm just wondering if this has any effect on their performance- like, are they going to 'perform' like 32-bit programs, since they're installed in the x86 directory? Or will they still take advantage of the 64-bit os?

I apologize if the answer is obvious or something- this is just my first time using a 64-bit os, so i'm trying to make sense of the difference.

Truncated Window In All Apps

Setting up a new system with windows 7, all displays on the monitor are chopped off, i.e. , And 8 1/2 by 11 object appears more like 8 x 10. Everything worked fin on my old windows 7 system. Only major difference is a new video card. Truncated edges occurs in all applications (word, excel, ie, email, etc. ) And on the desktop. I cannot see the start circle, and the list of items on the bottom of my desktop are half hidden. I have tried monitor settings, checked screen settings, screen resolutions, text size, etc. Nothing is helping. Any ideas?

Bug - Multi Monitor And Apps

I have 2 monitors.

Master monitor (left)
Secondary monitor (right)

I moved office and for cable length reason i changed the secondary monitor to be on the left. I set windows 7 to tell it that the secondary monitor is now on the left not the right.

Previous apps that i've used on the second monitor seem to default in the past to always loading on the screen on the right. Now when i open them application i can only see them in the task bar, they do not appear on screen. If i tell windows 7 my secondary monitor is on the right, i can then see the application on that screen.

This is a bug, windows should know that the secondary monitor is no longer connected on the right and it should not be loading the application window to a monitor that does not exist.

Non Install Apps In Win Xp Mode

I have a program that doesn't use an "install" program to set it up, but it's old enough that it can't run in windows 7 without using xp mode. So far, the only programs that i've been using in xp mode have had install programs, so they show up just fine in the start menu in windows 7, but i don't know how to take a program such as this and set it up so that i can run it in xp mode in win7.

To be specific, it's a ham radio satellite program called winorbit. How do i take a program that's just unzipped and run and put it in xp mode so that i can start it from windows 7? Or is it the case that in such circumstances i have to manually start the virtual xp system and run the program separately?

How To Activate Win 7 Office Xp Apps?

Under win7 i  installed virtual xp mode & office xp small business apps which i then activated. All works fine. I then read that most xp apps should run on win7 without problems. So, i decided to install office xp apps on win7 to see if they worked and if so i would remove the virtual xp and apps.

I was able to install office xp apps but i could not activate them as message states that they are currently activated on another computer (this is the same box, different os). I don't want to loose the activated apps if i can not get the win7 apps to activate.

Questions - how do i activate the win7 office xp apps? If i remove the virtual xp and its apps will i then be able to activate the win7 office xp apps?

Cannot Print From Win 7 Shell Or Apps

I have an hp printer that is networked and published in ad. I have one win7 machine that cannot print to it (others can with no issues. ) If i try to print an email from outlook, for example, the "sending" dialog box comes up, and then i get an "explorer.exe" has stopped as it generates the error file. If i print from notepad, i get the same behavior except this time it is notepad.exe. I check the app crash logs, but there is no faulting module listed. So far i have deleted all of the printers, drivers, ports and recreate them all, no change.

If i attach to the win 7 machine from a different one, and install the printer remotely, i can successfully print a test page so i am beginning to think it is not the print subsystem, per se, but something that sits between the app layer and the print system. But i am not sure what that would be. The only difference between this machine and the other win7 machines in our initial pilot group is that this machine was refreshed from xp using hard link migration in the mdt. The others were "clean" installs. I am not sure if it is even relevant, as usmt does not migrate printers, as far as i know.

Cannot Complete Login

I've got this machine i built not too long ago, been working great. Moved to a new location and went to fire it up, enter my password and it shows 'welcome' spinner and that's the last thing it ever does.

Boots fine in safe mode.
Went into msconfig and removed everything that made any sense.
Un-joined it from the domain
Turned off the firewall
Set the bios back to defaults (no clocking = slow)
Getting the 7001 error in event viewer
Also getting a 1005 on dcom w/ the shellhwdetection

Stumped.

Hate to re-install, it was running so nicely.

Taskbar Flashes - Application Appears To Lose Focus

When running some programs (i.e.microsoft access 2007 and tinker to name two), the programs appear to lose focus to the task bar in windows 7. The symptoms are as follows: 1) program window flashes (for microsoft access it happens only with the file open form) and the icon for the program on the task bar inexplicably scrolls to the right and back with each flash.

When this is occurring, it is nearly impossible to select an access file to open with the open. Dialog or play to play the game tinker. Setting hkey_current_usercontrol_paneldesktopforegroundlocktimeout to equal 30d40 seemed to resolve a similar issue with minesweeper, but not the other programs mentioned above. One more item to note: the issue appears to be user account specific. Any ideas?

There Is Not Enough Space Available To Complete This Operation

I install windows 7 upgrading from windows xp. My total hard disk is 500gb. But after installing windows 7 it shows 150gb disk space is unallocated. I tried in disk management i.e right clicking on "150gb unallocated disk" then new simple volume. Then format then next-next then finish and it shows error "there is not enough space available to complete this operation". N haa, i have done system restore in windows xp. Since pc gone slow & with sum problems.

But it doesn't work. Therefore, i installed windows 7 which retain pc faster. I think system restore occupy that 150gb disk space. So it's showing unallocated. How to retain back my total 500gb back. Give me proper solution.

Cannot Complete System Restore

When doing a system restore i get the message that system restore did not complete and no files were changed. I'm running windows 7 on a 64bit computer. I have tried doing a restore from safe mode, from a dos prompt and i have uninstalled my virus protection and firewall and still no luck. My system is operating properly in all respects. I was running some media server software named playon and was having some issues so their tech support told me to change some networking options. I had to uninstall that software and now it will not let me reinstall so i am trying to do a system restore to a point before i changed the network settings.

Download Programs To Default Folder "program Files" 32-bit Or 64-bit

I have been confused if programs automatically download to the optimum "program files" for 32-bit or 64-bit or do i have to select which if the two program files i want it in? It seems everything has been going into the x86 file. I don't want to just move them all over to the 64-bit file if they really belong in the x86 file, but i am sure my new photoshop programs belong in the program files file yet they seen to have downloaded into the program files (x86) instead. Also, how am i to know which programs are better suited for either folder?

Update: i tried copying the photoshop file and moving it to the 64-bit folder but it won't let me do so, saying a file is in use somewhere. I do not have any files from this open; i even restarted the computer to completely close anything that might be open and i get the same message. Is this maybe because it does not belong in the program files folder for 64-bit programs? Any other hints on how i can move this program, along with adobe premiere elements (for making videos) that gives me the same message? I have been told these programs would work better running as 64-bit programs so that is why i want to move them.

Video Hardware Error Appears When External Monitor Is Connected

Video hardware error message appears when an external monitor is connected to the laptop and i move the mouse after windows 7 has turned off the display (after 10 minutes according to "balanced" power plan). I run windows 7 professional 64-bit on my dell xps m1530 laptop and also use an acer v223w external monitor connected through hdmi/dvi cable. The graphics card is a nvidia geforce 8600m gt with 256mb. I have the latest graphics card driver (version 8. 16. 11. 8681) and monitor driver installed.

Everything works fine, except that i always get a video hardware error when i move my mouse to get the display back after windows 7 has turned it off (after 10 minutes according to "balanced" power plan). Sometimes the whole system crashes and i get a blue screen. I didn't have this problem two weeks ago when i was still running vista 32-bit. What should i try to solve this problem, other than disabling the "screen turn off" option in the power plan?

Cannot Complete Upgrade - Installation Just Stops

Cannot complete upgrade from win vista home premium 64 to win 7 home premium 64 using student offer, installation just stops at transferring files, settings and programs with no hd activity. I have tried upgrading my pc from vista home premium 64 to windows 7 home premium 64 four separate times, using microsoft's academic upgrade offer.

I use the upgrade option in installation, have tried both "online get latest installations updates" and "do not get latest install updates" and my upgrade goes fine all the way to the end when it should be moving my files, settings, and programs over to win 7  from vista, this is after win 7 has been installed at this point everything just stops, no hd activity, computer is not locked up though, caps lock still works, can move mouse, can even hit the x button in the installation window and get the message "installation cannot be canceled now. Etc. ", But the computer is not doing anything because no hd activity, i even left it on for 8 hours and no movement what so ever once it gets to this point.

I ran microsoft windows upgrade advisor the downloadable one and the one win 7 installation runs, and according to it everything should upgrade fine. I know this is extremely frustrating, i updated my drivers and everything yet it still get stuck at the end. I think doing a custom install would work, but i did not want to have to re-install everything, if i would have wanted to do a clean install, i would have purchased win 7 professional for the same price as home premium, since it is the version i preferred, but just to lazy to re-install everything on my pc.

The pc i am trying to install it on is a new system, just built in march of this year, core i7 920 system, and i even took it back down to stock clock in the bios, just in case that was causing problems. Anyone have any ideas, besides doing a custom install?

Unable To Get Complete Channel List

Where do i begin?I am running a wireless network using a cable modem that has a cisco wgt54 wireless router hooked to it. I am also running a cat 5 cable from the router to my desktop. The desktop also has wireless and sees my wireless network. I have a panasonic th-50pz850u 50" hd plasma tv. It has an rj-45 jack for internet access. I currently have a game adapter (bridge) attached in order to get vieracast and firmware updates. I just bought a gateway dx4300-17 desktop that has a tv tuner card, it also has the microsoft ehome infrared transceiver which seems to be working.

The desktop came with a windows media player remote. I am running windows 7 home premium x64i am using a samsung t260hd lcd monitor with has an internal tv tuner card. (1080p)i have split my incoming cable coax to go to the cable modem and to the samsung monitor tv in connector. I have scanned for tv channels (using samsung setup). I received about 60 digital channels and 10 analog channels. When i bought the dx4300 and put the cable coax to the tv tuner (from samsung monitor) i brought up windows media player.

I have configured the monitor and scanned for channels using the "task" option in wmp. I can only discover 9 channels (all local). I have tried every way possible to configure using wpm. If i try to install the tv guide (manual scan) i get a blue screen of death and the computer reboots. So i skip that section. Question 1 - how can i best use the ehome infrared transceiver (clueless to what it does)?Question 2 - why do i scan much more channels on my monitor tv tuner card than wmp/dx4300? I'm using the same cable coax. Question 3- how can i best use the complete system to achieve the optium value of all devices?

Autoforms Complete Stopped Working

I have seen many posts, questions and answers on this topic. None of them worked for me and judging from what i have seen, i am not the only one. When it stopped working, no settings had been changed and no new software added. All my settings are set for it to work. I have reset these settings and unchecked all boxes, rebooted and checked them again. I was told this would reset them. This did not work. I was told about registry entries, all mine checked with what i was told. The only one that didn't was an internet explorer under policies. My registry does not have this entry.
