Can't Assign A Drive Letter / Mount In Disk Management

Windows 7 shows external drive in device manage but cant assign a drive letter/mount in disk management. I have an external seagate 250 gig drive which currently works fine on my xp netbook and which worked fine on my vista laptop until i "upgraded" to windows 7 (manufacturer's upgrade via dvd).

Now the external drive (ntfs) is seen in device manager but does not mount. In disk manager it just labels this drive as "disk 1 online". If i try to assign a letter i get an error message that cant be done because the console is not up to date (ie the message tells me to refresh, restart the manager, or the computer). Of course none of those 3 options work!

Disk And Memory Management

The computer is emachines t3612. Recently upgraded to windows 7 (32). Deleted the recovery drive (d:) as it was representative of the original windows vista home basic that was upgraded to vista home premium. Tried to be a "whiz" and use the memory on c: - i failed and a friend suggested moving the memory to the user file. I did. When the cd/dvd drive did not respond as d: i changed it back to e: but it still will not work (except for a music cd. Is there anyone out there that can help me straighten this mess out?

The cd/dvdw driver is tsstcorpcd/dvdw ts-h652d ata device. I contacted emachines who will not assist because the machine is out of warranty (unless i pay them a small fortune) and tsst doesn't appear to have this model driver any longer, but someone asserted it is the same as samsung sh-5182d that i am to fearful to try. I have considered returning to the upgrade disc to do a clean installation, but it took so long to get the programs and the computer to a really good working state that i do not want to start from scratch again.

I need specific instructions on how (or if) i can move all the available memory to c: and make d: the cd/dvdw drive.

Resizing A Partition With Disk Management Applet Of Cp

I'm trying to resize a partition using the disk management sub-applet of the control panel's computer management, and need help because needless to saythis beast doesn't work like the good old partition magic that i knew and loved back in the xp days of yore. :-) On my test machine i have a hard drive with 5 partitions as follows: primary partition| logical drive h: d: | e: x c:4 gb 31 gb | 105 gb 18 gb 27 gbi wish to expand the 27 gb c: partition to include the 18 gb of free space adjacent to it (i freed up the 18 gb from the e: partition to enable doing this).

However when i right-click on the c: partition, the "expand" option is greyed out, and i can't figure out how to get this to work. I know i could back up the e: and c: partitions, delete and reallocate everything, then do a restore, but there's got to be an easier way back in the partition magic days this always worked, but i'm missing something with this disk management applet. If some kind soul could point me in the right direction, i'd sure appreciate it.

Working Raid 1 Drives Show Failed Under Disk Management

New install of win7, and my previously working raid 1 drives show failed under disk management. I was using the release candidate for windows 7 until today when i installed the full win7 premium. I have several hard drives, two of which are connected in a raid 1 configuration (mirroring). They worked fine in the release candidate, but when i installed the full version today they were not detected while my other hard drives were.

The two previously mirrored drives showed up in the disk management as being foreign. I right clicked and imported the foreign disks. This brought them online, but still not functional. I tried right clicking and selecting reactive drive, but they are red and say "failed" where the other drives are blue and show "healthy". How do i get the drives to be recognized and usable again? I do not want to lose any information stored on them.

Moving Data From 1st Disk To 2nd Disk

I installed my w7 on a single disk pc then i added a second disk for data. I want to have all my data (documents, photos, music, etc. ) In this second disk. In xp, when i did so, i copy my documents from "documents and settings" folder to the new location (d:/) and i was done. Now in w7 i open the "user" folder i found that files are not on a single folder but that there are several document folders (images, documents, etc. ) And settings folders (favorites, etc. ). May i copy all the user folder to the new location or i must leave there some of them in c:/system/users? In xp, when i move my documents to d:, every thing was redirected there (default1 saving folder, default download folder, defautl music folder, etc. ) In w7, would happen the same? The link on the desktop will redirect me to the location or may continue pointing the old one.

Disk Read Error And Recovery Disk Not Working

I have a toshiba satellite c650 that has recently come up with a disk read error. I want to access the command prompt to try some potential solutions that i have read about on the internet. I have made a windows 7 recovery disk using my other acer laptop which also has windows 7 installed. When i use the recovery disk and it has loaded the files etc it just brings up a black screen and the cursor. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? I tried booting my acer laptop from the recovery disk and it worked fine. Also does anyone have any suggestions as to why i am getting the 'disk read error - hit ctrl, alt and delete to restart' message?

Error - Logonui Exe No Disk - Outlook Exe No Disk

I have windows 7 professional running 64 bit. A very annoying error pops up every five minutes or so. The message varies and can read "logonui exe no disk" or "outlook exe no disk" or "your favorite app. - No disk" depending on what i am running at the time. I have looked at many forums and can see that this error occurred in previous windows flavors. Some answers point to malware or infected file, others seem to think it's a corrupt install file. I have a fresh install of win 7. My previous os being xp.

I have reinstalled win7 and tried repair functions. No luck so far.

Error - There Is No Disk In Drive

I am getting this error code any time i turn on my hp photosmart, and also when i close the tray on my cddvd burner. I am running an acer aspire 5920. I did a clean install of windows 7 over my vista home premium. I'm pretty sure that i still am considered a novice user, comparatively speaking.

No Disk In The Drive Message

I use quickbooks and backup to their server. I can do so just fine with no problem until i insert a memory stick into the usb drive. The next time i try to backup to quickbooks server i get the message, there is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drivedeviceharddisk2dr2. I hit return several times and then the backup will begin.

I'm not even trying to back up onto the memory stick. If i reboot the computer then i don't get the message until the next time i insert a memory stick. Any suggestions? I have called quickbooks and they don't help because after i reboot i am successful so they say it is a computer issue. I called zt systems tech support and they are no help.

Installing New Disk Drive

My problem is more involved than the title suggests. Let me explain.

When i upgraded from vista to windows 7 i attempted a files in place upgrade. That upgrade failed and got itself into a continuous loop attempting to back out of the upgrade. I have two drives, the main boot drive and a second 1 terabyte drive. I should have just reloaded windows clean on the main boot drive, but i didn't. I loaded windows on my terabyte drive, hoping that i would be able to save my data on the boot drive, which i was never able to do. I have been running fine that way, but. Now i want to replace that boot drive with a new larger drive. My question is:

Where is the registry stored. Is it on my boot drive or is it on my terabyte drive that i loaded windows onto. If i remove my old boot drive and install a new drive, will i still have a usable system.

My old drive boots now as drive d:. My terabyte drive boots as c:. It is actually configured as a dual boot system now, but i never boot up the old system because it is still in the infinite loop trying to back out of the upgrade.

Win 7 Recognize Flash Drive As Disk Drive

Windows 7 will not recognize flash drive, sees it as disk drive. How do i get win 7 to recognize my flash drive for what it is and allow me to use it? Whenever i try to open it in my computer it tells me there is no disc in the drive. Disk manager list it as a usb drive. Win 7 says flash drive is a disk drive in my computer. Device manager lists it as a usb flash drive but lists it under disk drive.

Upgrade With New Hard Disk Drive

Vista 32 bit home premium (oem) to windows 7 64 bit home premium (upgrade) with new hard disk drive my current setup: i have a 2 year old hp laptop which came with windows vista home premium 32-bit pre-installed (oem). I have a partition on the hard disk that will allow me to 'restore' my system. I also received the 'restore' dvd from hp. I do not have the os re-installation dvd as this was oem (and hp doesn't give these out with their laptops) - i only have the 'restore' dvd / partition on the hdd.

I bought the windows 7 64-bit home premium (upgrade version) last summer when win 7 was released but have not had the time / courage to use it yet! (Laziness too!). Current problem: my laptop hdd is only 160gb and its already too full. This is what i want to do: i would like to replace my existing 160gb hdd with a new 500gb hdd and move from my existing vista 32-bit os to the new windows 7 64-bit os. If at all possible, i would like to do a clean install of windows 7 on
The new hdd instead of upgrading from vista to windows 7. Can this be done?

Floppy Drive Or Disk Not Recognized

Windows7 ultimate (64 bits) does not recognize a usb-connected floppy drive or disk that works fine with windows xp and, before i installed windows7, that used to work with vista ultimate (64 bits). I can plug this teac drive into another machine, a notebook running windows xp, and there is no problem-i see the six .doc files on the diskette, and i can open all of them. But when the same drive (with the same 3. 5" floppy diskette) is plugged into the window7 machine, i am told to insert the diskette, which is never read.

A speedometer for computer slowly proceeds across the top of the screen, but nothing happens. No matter what i do, i see: "please insert a disk into floppy disk drive (a)". Rebooting does not help. And canceling and reinsertion of the diskette changes nothing. Launching word and then trying to open the files from word's open gets me nowhere. Disabling my anti-virus software changes nothing.

Windows tells me that the floppy drive is installed; i see it listed by name (teac drive) in device manager; and from device manager i have tried deleting the driver for this teac drive-windows then reinstalls it. I also tried to update this drive from device manager, but then i am told: "windows has determined that the driver software for your device is up to date". Please help.

Format Disk In Drive F/sd Card

So this is the first time on my new computer that i'm trying to upload pics from one of my cameras. It has an sd card. So i put the sd card in the slot on my computer and it says i need to format the disk in drive f before i can use it. I never had this problem with my old xp computer. I really don't want to loose my pics. But after putting the card back into my camera now my camera has an error message of "card not initialized".

What the heck happened to my sd card? All i did was stick it in the sd slot. Didn't try to format it or anything after reading that it will erase all content. Help? Is my card bad now? Is saving my pics a lost cause? Why do i have to format it when it worked fine before? I have used my new computer to upload pics from memory pro cards from my other cameras numerous times. No problem.

Drive Will Not Recognize The Win 7 Disk

I inserted the windows 7 home premium disk. It opened as advertised and gave me instructions on what to do prior to installing. I followed all recommend procedures including deleting trend micro and photoshop elements 4, etc. After deleting trend micro vista asked to restart the computer. I did as it asked. After doing that, my windows vista will not recognize the disk. When i try to access the drive via computer/dvd drive e:, i get the message; "insert a disk". The drive will read other disks just fine but not the windows 7 disk now what?

Low Disk Space On Recovery (d) Drive

I just switched my dell studio 15 from windows vista to windows 7. Once i got everything set up, i started receiving an error message that reads "low disk space on recovery drive". I have already gone and changed the program files to default to the c drive by going in through the registry (?) But am not sure what else i can do. I have tried uninstalling programs, but it tells me that i don't have enough disk space to do so. I only have the following folders in my recovery partition: dell, perflogs, program files, sources, tools, users, windows. Any suggestions of what i should do?

Full D Recovery Drive Disk Space Warning

I'm having a somewhat similar problem as a previous poster but. Have a newer computer and i upgraded from vista home premium to w7 home premium . My backup d drive is full . I guess the backup has not removed former backups . Now processing is slower and i worried about a total freeze. I used the disk manager and tried to add space onto my d from c but only ended up with an unallocated partition of 20g's .couldn't figure out how to add to d.

In the previous solution " press a special key combination when the computer starts, you can use the recovery partition to restore the computer to the way it was when it was new. " Would that remove windows 7(don't want to do that" or. Do i have to remove the partitions letters for the d? Would that just make it one big c drive? . Would that effect computers performance? How can i get that unallocated partition back to c . Or to d? Sorry for being so wordy but i could sure use some help.

Striping Existing System Volume / Disk Drive

I'm just wondering can i convert my current single os disk to be striped in windows 7? I'd like to get a bit of extra hdd performance but i don't want to have to reinstall windows. So i'm wondering if you can do this on a live system disk.

My board has some hardware raid support but i think that'll wipe the disks if i try and make a raid with them. I don't think the hardware raid performance on these consumer mother boards is that great anyway so a software raid will be fine if i can do it.

I have tried to install an add on to a game segplay and eventually get a message "not enough disk space on target drive. I am thinking some incompatibility between segplay games and vista home premium. Anyone have a suggestion?

Seagate freeagent go 500g external hard drive usable in xp professional works fine, but when i try to use it on windows 7. I get the error message "disk is corrupt or unreadable ". Installed windows professional x64 11/16/09. Everything works fine, all updated drivers for motherboard chipset. Dvd Drive Wont Read Disks - Error Please Insert Disk

I recently upgraded to windows 7. The drive worked fine as i used it to install the os. On start up windows wouldn't recognize the drive. Finding that this was a common problem on dual boot win7 x64 i tried the 3 standard fixes (f8 on start up, change letter of drive, upper and lower field reg edit) i briefly had the drive working but after about 10 minutes (while i was using the drive) it crashed and disappeared.

I went to the manufacturers site and downloaded the latest software for it, windows installed this and said it was working fine, i can now see the drive but it wont read anything, every time i put a disk in (any disk) it tells me the drive is empty when it isn't and spits it out. I have tried the windows troubleshoot program from the support site, it detects a problem but cant fix it.

The device manager shows the drive as installed and working. The lens shouldn't need cleaning as the drive is less than a month old. Please help, i've run out of ideas.system - dual boot xp / win 7 x64, xp on samsung 1tb hdd win 7 on maxtor 200gb hdd, 4gb ram, intel core 2 duo 3ghz, asus p5g43m motherboard, nvidia 8500gt gpu

Not Enough Disk Space

I installed windows 7 on my dell pc. The os is in d: drive. When i run windows easy transfer to retrieve my old files i get an error saying there is not enough disk space. Yet i have 198 gb free, it's supposed to take only about 116 gb. Now according to the easy transfer program it also wants to transfer some information to drive c:, though i didn't run the transfer program on drive c:, only on drive d: dell uses the c: drive with a only a small partition for some diagnostic programs. According to the transfer program, it wants to transfer about 83 megabytes of data, and theres only about 11 mb of free space left.

Am i going to have to get a partition program to make it a larger partition, or what? Also, when i run the transfer program and go to advanced options where it shows the drive mappings, it shows the drive mappings as c: -> c:, d: -> d:, and maxtor (where i had the easy transfer program store my files -> maxtor. I assume i need to change the maxtor to maxtor -> d:, is this correct?

Recovery Disk Gone

In the course of trying to resolve a problem with a "low disk space" error message that i have been getting i apparently my entire recovery drive (d:), about 8g.

I went to the "my computer" icon and right clicked and selected "manage", found the "disk management" section, selected my "hp-recovery (d:)", right clicked "format", changed from "fat32" to "ftns". The drive formatted and showed up empty. Then the directions i was following told me to right click on the new formatted drive and click "delete volume". It then talked about following some other steps about renaming the drive but mine has completely vanished.

So in conclusion, i'm an idiot. I deleted a recovery drive and didn't even fix the problem i set out to fix. Please if anyone can help i would be very grateful.

Win 7 Boot Disk

I will be getting an acer laptop next week with windows 7 home premium 64-bit pre-installed on it. I know that acer does not provide disks with their computers for the programs. I want to be able to boot my windows 7 from a disk should it become needed.

How do i create or get a boot disk for windows 7 once i have recieved my computer?

On another note i have been reading several answered questions to find the answer and have come across discussions about creating back up images of the drive. I planned on doing this right out of the box and have been researching programs for this purpose. They didn't mention a program. Does windows 7 let me do this without another program or are they just not saying that they are using another program?

Cannot Run Check Disk

I can't check my system partition. I can't run some  windows functions: calculator, paint, screen saver, maybe it's can't find the file to run (it's icon become gray, screen saver: can't find rundll32.exe). But it's still in my hard disk and can run if i find it out and click. I also can't run firewall because it's dependence services can't start.

So i think partition is error and checked it. On windows, not successful to run "chkdsk" with command prompt. And after restart it's can't check with the note about need to install some software to check. I've just uninstall some soft wares, include "microsoft visual c+ 2005 redistribution" (there are microsoft visual c+ 2005, 2008. I think it isn't important).

Check Disk Problems

Bought my hp dv7 in nov & have had 3 computer crashes. I reboot and get a screen that says 'need to do disk check on c & type of file is ntfs'. Starts countdown & freezes. Have had it back where i bought it and all they can do is a complete sys restore. This weekend i got a message center msg saying that a sys scan/sys maint was scheduled so i clicked on it. Got msg: attempt repairs of disk volume errors. Reboot to repair problems such as bad sectors etc. Clicked next & got "issues found disk volume errors detected & a pop-up asking if i wanted to do sys restore.

Said yes & it said i couldn't because local c had errors & windows detected file sys corruption on c so had to do check disk. I scheduled a check disk & when i rebooted it actually did the count down & it actually completed the whole process & found no issues. Has rebooted without incident so far. In doing some research today i learned this is a windows 7 issue. I'm not computer literate so am afraid to do any of the suggested things without knowing which i should try.

One suggestion said it might prompt to insert the win 7 disk but i don't have a disk as the laptop came pre-loaded. All i have are the sys recovery disks i was prompted to create on the first boot up.
